Introduction
This Special Instruction is used to set up communications with and flash both the 10R-4085 Engine Electronic Control Gp and 10R-1824 Engine Electronic Control Gp.
For this procedure utilize the FT3193 Wiring Harness, Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET), and a Caterpillar Communication Adapter. These tools are used to communicate with the 10R-4085 Engine Electronic Control Gp and the 10R-1824 Engine Electronic Control Gp. Follow the procedure outlined below.
Communications Setup and Flashing Procedure
- Plug the 40-pin harness connector into the J1 connector of the ECM. Refer to Illustration 1.
- Plug the 9-pin harness connector to the Caterpillar Communication Adapter.
- Connect the black harness clip to "–VBAT".
- Connect the red harness clip to "+VBAT".

Illustration 2 g02848244 Note: Cat ET will not communicate with a blank Reman ADEM II-6 ECM unless Caterpillar Data Link (CDL) is connected. Also, Cat ET must be configured for CDL communication.
Note: If the communication is not stopped, an "Engine: Not Supported" message will be shown. This message is normal since the ECM is loaded with basic software. Refer to Illustration 2.
- Start the communication with Cat ET then stop the communication.
- Select "Winflash" from the "Utilities" menu on Cat ET.

Illustration 3 g02848316 Note: ECM will not flash unless American Trucking Association (ATA) is connected and Winflash is configured for ATA communication (1). Refer to Illustration 3.
- Current software will show 0000000 (2). This reading is normal and does not mean the ECM has not been memory washed at the factory. Refer to Illustration 3.
- Wait until the ECM has been linked.
- Press the "Browse" button in order to select the name of the flash file that will be programmed into the ECM.
- When the correct flash file is selected, press the "Open" button.
- Verify that the "File Values" match the application. If the "File Values" do not match the application, obtain the correct flash file.
- When the correct flash file is selected, press the "Begin Flash" button.
- Cat ET will indicate when flash programming has been successfully completed.
