Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs. A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person should also have the necessary training, skills, and tools to perform these functions properly.

Improper operation, lubrication, maintenance, or repair of this product can be dangerous and could result in injury or death.

Do not operate or perform any lubrication, maintenance, or repair on this product until you have read and understood the Tool Operating Manual.

Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this manual and on the product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons.

The hazards are identified by the "Safety Alert Symbol" and followed by a "Signal Word" such as "DANGER", "WARNING", or "CAUTION". The Safety Alert "WARNING" label is shown below.

A non-exhaustive list of operations that may cause product damage are identified by "NOTICE" labels on the product and in this publication.

Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance that might involve a potential hazard. The warnings in this publication and on the product are, therefore, not all inclusive. If a tool, procedure, work method, or operating technique that is not recommended by Caterpillar is used, the operator must be sure that the procedures are safe. The operator must also be sure that the product will not be damaged or made unsafe by any unspecified procedures.

The information, specifications, and illustrations in this publication are based on information that was available at the time that the publication was written. The specifications, torques, pressures, measurements, adjustments, illustrations, and other items can change at any time. These changes can affect the service that is given to the product. Obtain the complete and most current information before you start any job.

When replacement parts are required for this product Caterpillar recommends using Caterpillar replacement parts or parts with equivalent specifications including, but not limited to, physical dimensions, type, strength, and material.

146-1738 Precision Borescope

(1) Borescope Case (2) Precision Borescope (3) 90° Viewing Adapter (4) Flashlight

The 146-1738 Precision Borescope is a high quality optical instrument which contains precision optical components. Rough handling of the borescope may result in breakage or damage of these components.

The borescope is intended for visual inspection of areas that normally can only be seen by disassembling the component. The borescope has a reach of 30 cm (11.8 inch) and will fit in openings of 6.35 mm (0.250 inch) or larger. Using this tool can greatly increase the chances of finding internal damage during maintenance or routine overhaul procedures.

Note: The 146-1738 Precision Borescope is not intended for medical use.

General Precautions

  • Never hold the borescope by the tube. Only hold by the handle or body.

  • DO NOT drop the borescope.

  • Avoid touching the front and rear lens of the tubes with your fingers.

  • Keep the borescope dry, borescope is not waterproof.

  • While using the borescope, DO NOT bend or hit the tube.

Assembly

  1. Thread the flashlight onto the body. Do not grasp the borescope by the tube, hold it by the body and/or eye cup. Any bending force or impact on the TUBE may result in breakage of the optics.

  1. Finger tighten the flashlight until it firmly contacts the body. DO NOT over tighten.

  1. The 90 degree adapter slips over the tube of the borescope and is held in place with an O-ring. Care must be taken not to bend the borescope tube when installing the adapter.

Disassembly

  1. Grasp the knurled surface on the head of the flashlight with one hand and the body of the borescope with the other hand.

  1. Unscrew the flashlight.

Operation

  1. Attach the flashlight to the borescope body.

  1. Turn on the light by holding the head with one hand and rotate the flashlight handle slightly counterclockwise with the other hand. View from the base end of the handle.

  1. To adjust light intensity and pattern, rotate the handle of the flashlight. To observe the light output from the tip of the tube, hold the tip 25 mm (0.99 inch) or less away from any surface, or look through the borescope at the desired object.

  1. While holding the body, focus the borescope by turning the eye cup. The adjustable focus eyepiece can be focused from 1.0 mm (0.04 inch) to infinity.

  1. When finished with the inspection, turn OFF the light by rotating flashlight handle clockwise until resistance is felt and the light shuts off.

  1. The flashlight may be removed for storage or left in place.

Note: When using the borescope with the 90 degree adapter, the knurled ring may be rotated to allow viewing throughout 360 degrees without rotating the borescope.

Maintenance

Cleaning

Occasionally, it may become necessary to clean the front and rear lens of the borescope. Dust may be removed with compressed air or a soft brush. Oil and fingerprints may be removed using a soft cotton swab or soft, nonabrasive tissue, lightly dampened with 90% or purer isopropyl alcohol or reagent grade acetone. Use as little pressure and as few strokes as necessary to avoid scratching the lens.

NOTICE

Never scrub or rub the mirror surface. The polished mirror surface can easily be scratched by exerting too much force or improper cleaning methods and materials.

In order to best view the mirror for cleaning, attach the mirror tube to the borescope and turn the light ON. Pull the borescope back about 12.7 mm (0.50 inch) from the mirror and look directly at the mirror, not through the scope. If dust, dirt, grease, or other contaminants are present, use the following procedure.

  1. Dust: blow the dust off with compressed air.

  1. Dirt: gently clean the mirror using a soft cotton swab, lightly dampened with 90% or purer isopropyl alcohol or reagent grade acetone. Gently brush the cotton swab across the surface in one direction. Repeat with a new, slightly moist cotton swab. If the mirror is streaked, repeat the procedure.

  1. Grease, oil, or smudges: gently clean the mirror using a soft cotton swab, lightly dampened with 90% or purer isopropyl alcohol or reagent grade acetone. Gently brush the cotton swab across the surface in one direction. Repeat with a new cotton swab and 90% or purer isopropyl alcohol or reagent grade acetone. If the mirror is streaked, repeat the procedure.

  1. Dirt, sand, metal filings, or other debris: blow the contaminant off with compressed air or rinse it off with 90% or purer isopropyl alcohol or reagent grade acetone.

Battery Inspection

Remove and inspect the batteries for leakage at least once a month. To remove the batteries unscrew the base of the flashlight handle. If either battery shows signs of leakage, replace both batteries. Remove the batteries before storing the borescope for long periods of time.

Lamp (Bulb) Replacement

A spare lamp (bulb) is provided in the base of the flashlight handle. To replace the bulb, unscrew the head from the flashlight handle and gently pull the bulb from the socket. Unscrew the base from the handle, remove the spring from the base, and remove the spare bulb. Make sure that the bulbs wire leads are straight and insert the bulb into the socket. Replace the base and head on the flashlight.
