Early Hour Wear of Piston Rings and Cylinder Liners due to Neglect of Air Cleaner Maintenance on Certain 3512C Petroleum Engines{1201, 1225}

Usage:

3512C R1A
Pumper:
SPF343C (S/N: RTX1-UP)
Petroleum Engine:
3512C (S/N: R1A1-UP; R1S1-UP)

Introduction

The permanent solution to the problem is proper maintenance of the engine air filter.

Problem

NOTICE

Never run the engine without an air cleaner element installed. Never run the engine with a damaged air cleaner element. Do not use air cleaner elements with damaged pleats, gaskets or seals. Dirt entering the engine causes premature wear and damage to engine components. Air cleaner elements help to prevent airborne debris from entering the air inlet.

Some early hour failures of piston rings and cylinder liners have been reported for the engine listed above. The failures are due to neglecting to perform proper maintenance of the engine air cleaners.

Caterpillar is not responsible for failures resulting from abuse, neglect, or improper repair.

Illustration 1 is a screen print from Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) of events logged in an engine Electronic Control Module (ECM). The 127 occurrences of E272(1) Inlet Air Restriction Warning are the maximum number of any event that the ECM can record.

Solution

Perform the maintenance for the air cleaner that is recommended in the engine Operation and Maintenance Manual.

The recommendation for checking the engine air pressure differential is "Every Day".

The engine Operation and Maintenance Manual states: to avoid the derating of engine operation, replace the air filter element before reaching the maximum differential pressure 6 kPa (25 inch of H2O).

Note: To extend the service life of the air cleaners, install two-stage air cleaners and precleaners. Refer to Product News, LEXW0155, "Dual-Stage Air Cleaner and Pre Cleaner Now Available for Cat® 3512C HD SCAC Well Service Engines".
