Electronic Control Unit - Flash Program

Perform the following procedures to flash program an ECU. The ECU is flashed in order to upgrade software. The ECU is flashed in order to load software into an ECU. Flash programming of an ECU must also be done if the ECU has been replaced. The Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) contains the program WinFlash. WinFlash is used to load software into the ECU. The following procedure is used in order to flash software into an ECU.

  1. Connect the 7x-1425 Data Link Cable between the 7x-1700 Communication Adapter and the ET.

  1. Connect the 139-4166 Data Link Cable between the 7x-1700 Communication Adapter and the diagnostic connector of the machine.

  1. Use WinFlash to load the new software.

Note: The ECU will indicate that the ECU is "BLANK" if the ECU is blank or an unsuccessful "FLASH" was performed.
