Personal injury or death can result if two persons are not used in the following procedure. |
Personal injury or death can result from machine articulation or movement. Machine frames can move and a person can be crushed. Connect the steering frame lock link between the front and rear frames before working on machine. |
Personal injury or death can result from escaping fluid under pressure. Escaping fluid under pressure, even a very small pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue and cause serious injury and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury. Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak. |
Before you perform the test procedure, complete the following procedure:
- Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting
Reference: Refer to the Service Manual module Testing and Adjusting, "Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting" for the machine that is being serviced.
- Install the steering frame lock in order to keep the machine from turning.
- Engage the parking brake. Move the transmission direction selector to the NEUTRAL position.

0 to 40000 kPa (0 to 5800 psi) pressure tap to the steering pump (STR-P). - Start the engine. Operate the engine at high idle. Exercise the steering system until the normal operating temperature is reached. Normal operating temperature may be monitored with the advisor display or the Electronic Technician software.
- After the oil has reached normal operating temperature, lower the work tool to the ground. Stop the engine.

(4) Adjustment screwNote: Relief valve (2) is located on the steering control valve.
- Loosen locknut (3) on steering crossover relief valve (2). Turn adjustment screw (4) counterclockwise by two full turns. This action will lower the setting of the steering crossover relief valve to a setting that is lower than the cutoff pressure of the steering pump. Hold adjustment screw (4) in place and tighten locknut (3).
- Start the engine. Raise the work tool slightly off the ground. Run the engine at low idle.
Note: While you perform the next steps, do not keep the STIC steering control lever in the LEFT TURN position or in the RIGHT TURN position for more than 10 seconds. If necessary, release the steering control lever and wait for 30 seconds before you repeat the step.
- Move the STIC steering control lever to the LEFT TURN position or to the RIGHT TURN position. Hold the steering control lever in place until a reliable pressure reading is obtained.
- Record the pressure reading on the pressure gauge. The reading should be lower than
31000 ± 700 kPa (4500 ± 100 psi) . Turn adjustment screw (4) slowly in the clockwise direction while you observe the pressure gauge. The pressure reading should increase to31000 ± 700 kPa (4500 ± 100 psi) . Then, the pressure should stop rising. Stop turning adjustment screw (4) when the pressure stops rising.Note: The pressure stops rising because the steering pump has reached a stall condition.
- When the pump stall pressure is reached, continue to turn adjustment screw (4) clockwise by an additional 3/4 turn. Hold adjustment screw (4) in place and tighten locknut (3) to a torque of
13 ± 2 N·m (115 ± 15 lb in) . - Lower the work tool to the ground. Stop the engine.
