Safety Warnings

------ WARNING! ------

At operating temperature, the hydraulic tank is hot and under pressure.

Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.

Remove the filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Remove the filler cap slowly in order to relieve pressure.

----------------------

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from escaping fluid under pressure.

Escaping fluid under pressure, even a very small pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue and cause serious injury and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury.

Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak.

Hydraulic Hose Press Requirements

Caterpillar LMP hose and couplings up to, and including, 50.8 mm (2.00 inch) -32, can be crimped in the 4C-3660 4C-5052 4C-5053 9U-5792 9U-7261 Hydraulic Hose Press Arrangements . These presses will be referred to collectively as " 4C-3660 Presses " throughout this Tool Operating Manual.

The 6V-4900 Press Arrangement with 4C-9900 1U-9160 6V-4880 Press Groups can be used for hose sizes up to, and including, 31.8 mm (1.25 inch) -20, when used with the new 136-3642 Crimp Group . Size is limited to 25.4 mm (1.00 inch) -16 without the 136-3642 Crimp Group . The 4C-6601 Tilt Stand must be used for all sizes since the dies will not work in the horizontal position.

The 7S-1100 Press Arrangement , along with 5S-2801 Press Group , can be used for hose up to 25.4 mm (1.00 inch) -16, but will not accept the 136-3642 Crimp Group . The 4C-6601 Tilt Stand is required.

The 4C-3670 4C-3680 4C-5054 Presses and cannot be used for these hose and coupling assemblies.

Tools required for each press are listed in the ""Crimping Tools" " section.

General Guidelines

Producing high-quality hose assemblies requires observing the following general guidelines.

  1. Cut the ends of the hose as square as possible.

  1. Clean the inside of the hose to avoid contamination of the hydraulic system. 233-7191 233-7192 233-7193 265-4959 Hose Cleaner Groups or are recommended.

  1. Do not use any lubricant when placing couplings onto hoses.

  1. Insert the hose in the new coupling until it is firmly against the bulkhead in the coupling.

  1. Carefully seat the coupling against the step in the die group before crimping.

  1. Remove sharp edges and burrs on crimped couplings with 80 grit emery paper, or other suitable means.

  1. Measure finished crimp diameters to verify conformance to specifications.

Note: The rubber belts are the only serviceable parts of the crimping die groups.

Spacer Rings and Plates

Die groups are designed to allow one set of dies to be used for 1E294 1E716 1E844 hoses with the use of spacer rings and plates. The spacer rings also provide uniform steps in crimp diameter change, allowing for adjustments required due to wear or tolerance stackups [up to 31.8 mm (1.25 inch) only].

Tables 8 and 11 of this manual show a complete listing of the die groups, spacer rings, and spacer plates (along with the color-coding) required to crimp the various types and sizes of hose. In these tables, the vertical column next to the hose type lists both the hose lay line color and the color-code of the inner band on the bottom of the die set. For each hose type, the top color is the lay line color and the bottom color is the inner band (type) color on the dies to be used.

A row of colors is also listed. This color is the same as the outer band color on the bottom of the dies.

Note: Laminated color charts are also available. Form NEEG2736 is for 4C-3660 Presses or NEEG2737 for 7S-1100 6V-4900 Press Arrangements , as well as 4C-9900 Press Group .

To use the chart, first select the hose type, then read across to the hose size to read the part number of the die group. Notice that next to the die group part number columns are columns with the heading "DVDT." (On color charts NEEG2736 and NEEG2737, the correct DVDT is shown in parenthesis next to the die group part number.) The DVDT is used to select the spacer ring(s) or spacer plate from the tables at the bottom of the chart.

DVDT is the change (DELTA) in the vertical distance the dies travel from a reference position. As used here, the reference position (DVDT = 0.00) is the vertical position of the dies in the final crimp position without any spacer ring or spacer plate when used in the 4C-3660 Presses . DVDT is designed to be equal to 0.00 for 1E716 hose and some positive number for 1E294 1E844 hoses . In other words, no spacer rings are used for 1E716 hose , but spacer rings or plates are required for crimping 1E294 1E844 hoses .

Note: No spacer ring is required for 1E294-5 hose .

The 7S-1100 6V-4900 Press Arrangements , as well as the 4C-9900 Press Group , require a 134-9572 Black Ring for DVDT of 0.00 for all 1E716 hose and 1E294 -5 hose .

Adjusting Crimp Diameters

For each 0.40 mm (.016 inch) of vertical die travel into the bowl, the crimp diameter changes approximately 0.21 mm (.008 inch) for hoses up to 31.8 mm (1.25 inch) ID. The actual number varies because of varying spring back of the coupling after crimping.

Tables 8 and 11 list additional spacer rings to adjust crimp diameters of hose assemblies, if needed, that are not shown on the laminated charts NEEG2736 and NEEG2737. These parts include 134-9581 Plate , 134-9594 Spacer Rings , 134-9590 Spacer Rings for 4C-3660 Presses , 134-2786 134-2788 134-9578 Spacer Rings for the 7S-1100 6V-4900 Press Arrangements , and the 4C-9900 Press Group .

  1. Check the results.

    1. Specification from Table 7 is 34.29 mm (1.350 inch).

    1. Actual measurement of crimp diameter is 34.00 mm (1.339 inch), which is out of specification.

    1. The deviation from specification is-0.29 mm (.011 inch).

    1. DVDT must be increased to 7.00. Refer to Table 8 for spacer rings.

    1. Use a 134-9593 Yellow Spacer Ring on top of a 134-9589 Blue Ring placed on top of the 4C-4378 Bowl . The new measurement of the crimp diameter should be about 34.21 mm (1.347 inch), which is well within specifications.

Insertion Depth

Table 5 lists hose insertion depth for all LMP hose sizes. It is very important that the hose be inserted completely into the coupling.

It is recommended that the insertion depth be marked on the hose to ensure that the hose is completely inserted into the coupling (bottomed out). The proper angular orientation of the coupling is accomplished, as described in SEHS9052.

Crimping

The new Caterpillar designed die groups consist of eight segments, connected in two groups of four segments, each by a rubber belt. The rubber belt maintains the proper spacing between the die segments. The segments are made of hardened steel to minimize wear, but require the use of lubricant for proper crimping action and to minimize galling of the dies and bowl. Apply a liberal coating of molybdenum grease, such as 5P-0960 Grease , to the angled sides and tops of the dies before placement in the bowl.

Position the die group in the bowl with the split between the two groups of four at a 45 degree angle to the front of the bowl. This helps to minimize unevenness of the split on the two sides of the die group.

After inserting the uncrimped coupling in the dies, seat the open end of the coupling on the step in the die group. Check the spacing of the die segments and equalize the split, if necessary.

When using the 4C-3660 Presses , apply pressure until relief pressure is reached. Hold the pressure at the relief pressure for one full second.

When crimping 38.1 mm (1.50 inch) and 50.8 mm (2.00 inch) ID hoses, remove the 4C-4378 Adapter Bowl and install the 133-7362 Die Rest onto the separator. After placing the die group in the bowl, place the 134-9582 Press Plate between the dies and the split ring, which is part of the press.

Crimp Inspection

Quality control of finished crimped hose assemblies is maintained by measuring the crimp diameter and crimp length. This is also done to XT hose. Crimp diameter is measured at the center of the crimp length at four locations. Compare the average of the four readings to the specifications listed in Table 6.

Note: A laminated chart of crimp specifications is available by ordering NEEG2746.

The illustration below shows a measurement system, which accepts the four measurements and calculates the average.
