NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

  3. Apply Tooling (A) on the exhaust manifold studs.

Note: Discard the locknuts after use. Use new locknuts for installation.

  4. Attach a suitable lifting device on turbocharger (7). The weight of turbocharger (7) is approximately 42 kg (93 lb).

  5. Install the gasket and turbocharger (7) on the exhaust manifold. Install locknuts (8). Do not tighten the locknuts at this time.

  6. Install the exhaust piping on the turbocharger. Position the turbine housing with the exhaust pipe in order to prevent binding.

  7. If necessary, connect the air pipe assembly to the turbocharger. Install clamp (1). Position the compressor housing with the air pipe assembly in order to prevent binding.

  8. If necessary, connect the air inlet elbow to the turbocharger. Install clamp (6). Position the compressor housing with the air inlet elbow in order to prevent binding. Tighten clamp (6) to a torque of 8.5 ± 1.0 N·m (75 ± 9 lb in).

  9. Tighten the nut on the turbine clamp to a torque of 12.4 ± 0.6 N·m (110 ± 5 lb in). Do not overtighten the nut.

  10. Tighten the nut on the compressor clamp to a torque of 12.4 ± 0.6 N·m (110 ± 5 lb in). Do not overtighten the nut.

  11. Lightly tap around the diameter of turbine clamp with a soft hammer. Tighten the nut on the turbine clamp to a torque of 12.4 ± 0.6 N·m (110 ± 5 lb in). Do not overtighten the nut.

  12. Lightly tap around the diameter of compressor clamp with a soft hammer. Tighten the nut on the compressor clamp to a torque of 12.4 ± 0.6 N·m (110 ± 5 lb in). Do not overtighten the nut.

  13. Tighten the locknuts from Step 5 to a torque of 55 ± 5 N·m (41 ± 4 lb ft).

  14. Apply Tooling (A) to the bolts for tube assemblies (4) and (3). Install the gaskets and connect tube assemblies (4) and (3) to the turbocharger. Install the bolts.

  15. Install the O-ring seals on hose assembly (5) and hose assembly (2). Connect hose assembly (5) and hose assembly (2) to the turbocharger.

  16. Fill the cooling system with coolant to the correct level. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities" for more information.

End By:

  1. If necessary, install the air inlet elbows. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Air Lines - Remove and Install".
