Summary

Caterpillar applies a phosphate coating to track pins. This coating improves track joint performance and seal ability by increasing galling resistance. Caterpillar recommends the following cleaning methods to minimize coating removal.

NOTICE

Cleaning with strong alkaline cleaners (pH 10.5 and above in solution) removes the phosphate coating from track pins.

Safety

Illustration 1g02139237

Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs. A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person should also have the necessary training, skills, and tools to perform these functions properly.

This bulletin may contain hazardous steps. A safety alert symbol like the one below is used to indicate a hazard.

Warning messages identify a specific, imminent, latent, hazard that has a reasonable probability of resulting in personal injury or death if the warning is ignored.

------ WARNING! ------

Do not attempt to disassemble or assemble this machine until you read and understand the disassembly and assembly instructions. Improper disassembly and assembly procedures could result in injury or death.

Canceled Part Numbers and Replaced Part Numbers

This document does not include all canceled part number and replaced part number information. Use NPR on SIS for information about canceled part numbers and replaced part numbers. NPR will provide the current part numbers for replaced parts.

Cleaning Methods

Method 1: Hand Cleaning

  1. Wipe the outside surface of pins with a cloth and remove the old oil.

  2. Drain the excess oil from the center hole of the pins.

  3. Flush with an acceptable solvent or mild cleaner.

  4. Wash the pins with a power washer, if needed.

  5. Rinse and dry the pins prior to assembly.

Method 2: Immersion Bath Cleaning (Excessively Dirty Pins)

  1. Drain the excess oil from the center hold of the pins and load into a basket.

  2. Check the pH level and temperature of the immersion bath.

  3. Time, temperature, and bath concentration (pH level) are critical factors for successful cleaning.

  4. A pH level range of 7 to 10.5 is recommended.

  5. The temperature of the bath should not exceed 71° C (159.8° F).

  6. Lower the basket with pins into the immersion tank.

  7. A cleaning time of 15 minutes or less in solution is recommended.

    NOTICE

Do not leave pins in solution for extended periods of time. The longer pins are left in solution, the greater the chance for coating removal.

  8. Remove the basket from the tank and drain the pins of excess cleaning solution.

  9. Rinse and dry the pins prior to assembly.

Recommended Solvents and Chemical Cleaners

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from improper handling of chemicals.

Make sure you use all the necessary protective equipment required to do the job.

Make sure that you read and understand all directions and hazards described on the labels and material safety data sheet of any product used to clean the components.

Observe all safety precautions recommended by the chemical manufacturer for handling, storage, and disposal of cleaning agents.

Petroleum-Based Solvents

Commercially available petroleum-based solvents or mineral spirits are approved for cleaning phosphate coated track pins.

Note: Petroleum-based solvents are recommended for use in agitating dip tanks.

Water Soluble Chemical Cleaners and Recommended Concentrations

Water soluble chemical cleaners can be used to clean pins. However, pH level, cycle time, and solution temperature are critical factors to consider.

Product Description and Intended Use

HD Pressure Wash is a heavy duty all purpose alkaline cleaner/degreaser. This liquid cleaner is designed for use in pressure washers and hot or cold soak tanks. HD Pressure Wash is used where only ferrous (iron and steel) parts are cleaned and some rust protection is desired. HD Pressure Wash will remove dirt, oil, grease, paint, rust, varnish, ink, and carbon deposits.

Product Application

HD Pressure Wash can be used at concentrations from 3 - 10% and temperatures from ambient to 93° C (200° F). Most tanks and washers run at 3 - 4% concentration and 60° C (140° F).

Note: Running at concentrations above 10% does not increase cleaning efficiency or extend the life of the chemical strength.

Handling and Storage

Corrosive material causes severe burns and is harmful or fatal if swallowed. Use product and product solutions with local exhaust and ventilation. Wear goggles, rubber gloves, and other protective clothing as necessary to prevent contact. Product contains caustic materials. Product and product solutions may cause severe burns to skin and eyes. Inhalation of mist or vapor will cause burns of mucous membranes in nasal passages and throat. Ingestion of product will be harmful or fatal. Low level of ingestion will cause nausea and abdominal pains. If there is contact with eyes, immediately flush eyes with water for 15 minutes. Contact a physician immediately. For skin contact, wash with soap and water. Treat skin contact as a thermal burn. Contact a physician if irritation persists. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting. Drink large quantities of water to dilute product. Get medical attention immediately.
