Service Magazine, SEPD1233, 02 February 2011, "New Advanced Efficiency Filters Are Now Available for the Transmission Assembly and the Torque Converter Assembly Used on Certain Wheel Loaders". The information in this article has been updated. Refer to the following information.

Description of Change: Filter groups that use the 164-7577 Bypass Switch Gp in combination with Ultra High Efficiency Filters may experience premature activation. The premature activation occurs to the "change filter" light located in the cab. This switch/filter combination is used in many different filter groups and on multiple power train systems. A new line of Cat Transmission Filters has been introduced that eliminates this problem. This communication outlines the benefits of using the new filter elements and provides a cross reference for conversion to the new filter part numbers.

NOTICE

The new filters are for power train use only and not approved for hydraulic applications.

Adaptable To: The new 341-6643 Oil Filter Element, 343-4464 Oil Filter Element, 328-3655 Oil Filter Element As, and 343-4465 Oil Filter Element are Advanced Efficiency Filters for power train arrangements that can be used to replace the following filters:

Caterpillar recommends using the transmission filters below for transmission applications in place of the previously recommended hydraulic filters.

( 1 ) This part number has been discontinued. The replacement for hydraulic application is 338-3540 Oil Filter Element
Contamination is one of the major causes of transmission control system failure. Some power train oil systems were cleaned with fine cleanout filters. This use of fine cleanout filters frequently caused the oil to bypass the filter. The use of ultra high efficiency filters in power train oil systems is no longer recommended.

Caterpillar now recommends the use Cat Advanced High Efficiency Transmission Filters for power train applications. These new filters feature a synthetic media designed to deliver a high level of filtration performance and to reduce pressure drop across the media. The Cat Transmission Filters will increase filter life, perform better in cold weather, and during cold starts the instances of filter bypass are greatly reduced.
