General Information Section

Introduction

The Communications Adapter 3 Group is used with a dealer supplied laptop PC and related components. The Communications Adapter 3 Group used for transmitting data from a data link connection to the PC for data logging and analysis. The Communications Adapter 3 Group includes the communications adapter, data link cable, PC, USB cable and hard shell case with foam inserts.

Minimum PC Requirements

A dealer supplied PC (Laptop Computer)is required to download and operate the Communication Adapter 3 (CA3) software.

Minimum PC requirements are:

  • IBM® PC compatible with the Pentium IV 2.4 GHz processor

  • 512 MB RAM minimum

  • 1 GB of available hard disk drive

  • 40X speed CD-ROM drive or 8X speed DVDdrive or greater

  • 14.1 In XGA screen (800x600) or greater

  • Built-in pointing device or mouse

  • USB 1.1 or 2.0 port

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or greater

Operation Section

Installation of Communications Adapter 3 (CA3) Software

  1. Insert Media CD in laptop PC (dealer supplied) to install software and run "Comm Adapter 3.exe".

  1. The following screen now displayed:

    "Welcome to the Comm Adapter 3 Setup Wizard. This wizard will guide you through the installation of Comm Adapter 3. Close all other applications before starting Setup."

    1. Click "Next" to continue.

  1. The Comm Adapter 3 "Choose Install Location" window will display:

    "Choose Install Location"

    "Setup will install Comm Adapter 3 in the following folder. To install in a different folder, click Browse and select another folder. Click Install to start the installation."

    1. Select a destination folder location (default is recommended unless there is a need for a different location).

    1. Click "Install".

  1. The following message can appear on the Software Installation screen:

    "The software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP. (Tell me why this testing is important.)"

    "Continuing your installation of this software may impair or destabilize the correct operation of your system either immediately or in the future. Microsoft strongly recommends that you stop this installation now and contact the software vendor for software that has passed Windows Logo testing."

    1. Click "Continue Anyway".

      Note: Anytime this "Software Installation" message appears during the installation process, click "Continue Anyway". This message is a default message that appears when a program has not been approved by Microsoft. However, extensive measures have been taken to ensure that this software will operate correctly on your PC.

    Note: For Windows Vista users, Steps 6-10 in this section are not necessarily to be completed, if the hardware installs automatically.

  1. When the following message appears, the installation is complete:

    Installation Complete

    Setup was completed successfully.

    1. Click "Close" to proceed to the next step.

  1. Use Cable Assembly (3) to connect Communications Adapter 3 (1) to PC (11) USB port.

  1. "Found New Hardware Wizard" window will display, prompting the installation of new hardware for the CAT CA3 with this message:

    If your hardware came with an installation CD or Floppy disk, insert the CD or Floppy disk now.

    1. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)".

    1. Click "Next."

  1. The second "Found New Hardware Wizard" window will display with this message:

    "Please choose your search and installation options."

    1. Select "Search for the best driver in these locations".

    1. Select "Include this location in the search:"

    1. Click "Browse"and select:

      "C:\Program Files\Comm Adapter 3\Driver"

    1. Click "Next."

  1. The following message can appear on the "Hardware Installation" screen:

    The software you are installing for this hardware:

    1. Click "Finish" to close the wizard.

  1. To view basic information about the Communications Adapter 3, perform the following:

    1. Navigate through "All Programs" from the "Start Menu".

    1. Select "Comm Adapter 3" from the "All Programs".

    1. Select "Comm Adapter 3 Toolkit" from the "Comm Adapter 3", in order to open the "Communication Adapter 3 Toolkit". Refer to Illustration 17.

How to Use the Communications Adapter 3

Using the CA3 Toolkit

  1. Before using the Toolkit software to upgrade firmware, connect Communications Adapter 3 (1) to dealer supplied PC (11) using Cable Assembly (3). The Toolkit does not need to be connected to a data link connection to upgrade firmware.

    Note:

    1. Connect cable (3) to CA3 (1) .

    1. Connect cable (3) to USB port on PC (11).

  1. To open the Communication Adapter 3 Toolkit window. Go to "Start Menu" >> "All Programs">>"Comm Adapter 3" >> "Comm Adapter 3 Toolkit" If a CA3 is connected. The Summary screen will display a few seconds after start-up.

    Note: If no CA3 is connected or not being correctly detected, a "No devices detected" message will display at the bottom left of the screen. Make sure the CA3/PC USB cable is properly connected.

  1. Three icon buttons are displayed at the top of the screen. Click the Summary icon button at the far left to display the Summary screen. The other two icons shown are described in Steps 4 and 7.

  1. To update the firmware, select the middle Application Firmware Flash icon button which displays the options for firmware upgrades.

    1. Select a file to flash by clicking "Select File", browse to, and select the file. Click "Open".

    1. Click "Begin Flash" to send the file. Files of the type ".tar", for example,"R35_9-MAY-08.tar"

    1. Once flashing begins, the status bar indicates the progress of the file transfer from the computer to the CA3.

  1. The file transfer takes approximately 2 minutes, at which point the following dialog box with the following message will display:

    "The file transfer was successful. Please wait while the CA3 is reprogrammed and then resets."

    1. Click "OK".

  1. The CA3 display flashes indicator lights (1A) in sequence while the new firmware is installed. When the installation is complete, the lights stop flashing. The entire transfer and installation process that take less than 4 minutes.

  1. Click the Exit icon button on the right to exit the Toolkit.

Using Electronic Technician With the CA3

To use ET. The CA3 must be connected to a PC loaded with the latest version of CA3 software and to a data link connection on the machine.

  1. Connect CA3 (1) to PC (11) using Cable Assembly (3) .

  1. Open ET by selecting "Start Menu" >> "All Programs">> ET >> "Electronic Technician".

    Note: When opening ET with CA3 for the first time, the connection of CA3 can happen based on old settings.

    If this action occurs, click "Stop Connect".

  1. Go to "Utilities" >> "Preferences", and then select the "Communications" tab.

  1. Select the appropriate communication adapter.

    1. Select "Comm Adapter 3 (RP1210)" from the list of available adapters.

    1. Select a preference (check the box) for "Enable Dual Data Link Service".

      Click "OK" to save these settings.

  1. To connect the PC to the data link through the CA3, click the "Connect" icon button.

    (1B) CA3 Power Lamp

  1. When the CA3 is first connected, power lamp (1B) is YELLOW. In approximately one second, the light turns RED.

Note: While the CA3 is connected, the light for each data link will illuminate "(J1939 - RED, CDL - YELLOW, and J1708 - GREEN)".
