Description of Change: The new liner seal helps prevent coolant leaks that move from the underside of the liner flange into the cylinder head joint. Also, the new liner seal helps prevent fretting or damage from corrosion to the top deck of the cylinder block. The new seals are compatible with cylinders that have inserts for the top deck.
The new inserts are specially machined in order to accept the new liner seals during the installation of the liner.
Adaptable To: The following parts are adaptable back to first production on all 3500 Engines:

353-5617 Insert and 353-5618 Insert (1) Machined chamfer for the new 339-4950 Liner Seal |
The new 353-5617 Insert and 353-5618 Insert include a machined chamfer in order to accept the new 339-4950 Liner Seal. Refer to Illustration 2.
Refer to Reuse And Salvage Guidelines, SEBF8255 for the procedure in order to install the 353-5617 Insert or the 353-5618 Insert .
If a new insert is not used, a chamfer must be machined into the top edge of the liner bore in order to properly install the new 339-4950 Liner Seal. This chamfer can be machined on both previously inserted cylinders as well as cylinders that have not been inserted. Refer to Special Instruction, SEBF9203 for the procedure that is used in order to machine the chamfer.
Note: The 339-4950 Liner Seal will be damaged if the chamfer is not machined into the top edge of the liner bore. Also, the liner seal can not be correctly installed if the chamfer is not present.
Note: Do not coat the 339-4950 Liner Seal in engine oil for installation. 5N-5561 Silicone Lubricant is used for lubrication. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR9717 for the installation procedure. These changes are effective for all serial numbers for 3500 Engines that are built after 30November 2009.
