Introduction

Do not perform any procedure in the Special Instruction until you have read the information and you understand the information.

Braided steel hoses can be damaged by these conditions.

  • Improper installation

  • Rubbing against another surface

  • Exposure to excessive heat

If a braided steel hose is not installed with the correct technique, the braiding will kink. The kinking occurs when one end of the hose is secured and the hose is allowed to rotate during installation of the other end. The kinking causes permanent damage to the Teflon liner that is inside of the braiding. The flow of fluid is restricted.

A braided steel hose can also be damaged by rubbing against another surface, especially if the surface is not smooth.

Installation Procedure

  1. Loosely attach both ends of the hose. If clamps will also be used, loosely attach the clamps.

Note: At least one end of all Caterpillar braided steel hoses can accommodate two wrenches.

Area on the hose fitting for a second wrench

  1. Illustration 2 shows the area on a hose fitting for a second wrench. If both ends of the hose do not have the place for a second wrench, first install the end of the hose that does not have the place for the second wrench.

If the end of the hose has a fitting with an angle, orient the hose for the maximum distance away from any hot surface. For example, avoid the surfaces of the exhaust manifold and of the turbocharger.

Make sure that the hose does not rub against another surface.

  1. Before you tighten the second fitting, make sure that you use a second wrench in order to prevent the hose from rotating when you turn the second fitting.

If a braided steel hose is kinked, the hose has internal damage. Replace any hose that is kinked.
