5576-8     | Aftertreatment #1 Identification Number Module: Abnormal Frequency Pulse Width or Period     | The ECM detects the following conditions: No signal is detected from the aftertreatment identification module. There are no active 3509 diagnostic codes. The ECM has been powered for 2 seconds. Do not continue to operate the engine with the active fault. Engine power is derated.     |
5576-14     | Aftertreatment #1 Identification Number Module: Special Instruction     | The ECM detects the following conditions: The signal from the aftertreatment identification module is invalid. Diagnostic code 5576-8 is not active. The ECM has been powered for 2 seconds. Do not continue to operate the engine with the active fault. Engine power is derated.     |
The aftertreatment identification module sends a digital signal to the engine ECM in order to ensure that the correct CEM is installed to the engine.
If the total operating hours of the engine are greater than 25, the aftertreatment identification module will cease to send the signal. The diagnostic codes that are listed in Table 1 will be disabled.

Test Step 1. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes
- Establish communication between the electronic service tool and the ECM.
- Download the following items before performing any troubleshooting or clearing any diagnostic codes:
- Warranty Report
- Aftertreatment Regeneration Trigger History
- Product Status Report with Histograms
- Warranty Report
- Use the electronic service tool to check for active diagnostic codes.
Results:
- A 5576-2 diagnostic code is active. - Proceed to Test Step 9.
- A 5576-8 diagnostic code is active - Proceed to Test Step 2.
- A 5576-14 diagnostic code is active - Proceed to Test Step 9.
Test Step 2. Inspect Electrical Connectors and Wiring
- Inspect the P2/J2 connector. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.
- Inspect the 31-pin connector and the 40-pin connector. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.
- Inspect the connector for the aftertreatment identification module. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.
- Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the ECM connector that are associated with the aftertreatment identification module.
- Check the screw for the ECM connector for the correct torque of 6 N·m (53 lb in).
- Check the harness for abrasion and pinch points from the aftertreatment identification module back to the ECM.
Results:
- All connectors, pins, and sockets are correctly coupled and/or inserted. The harness is free of corrosion, abrasion, and pinch points - Proceed to Test Step 3.
- There is a fault with the harness and connectors -
Repair: Repair the connectors or the harness and/or replace the connectors or the harness. Ensure that all of the seals are correctly in place and ensure that the connectors are correctly connected.Use the electronic service tool in order to clear all logged diagnostic codes and then verify that the repair has eliminated the fault.

Test Step 3. Measure the Voltage to the Aftertreatment Identification Module
- Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
- Disconnect the aftertreatment identification module from the harness.
- Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
- Measure the voltage at the harness connector for the aftertreatment identification module from terminal 1 to terminal 6.
Expected Result:
The voltage should be 4.84 to 5.16 VDC.
Results:
- OK - The supply voltage is correct. Proceed to Test Step 6.
- Not OK - The supply voltage is out of the nominal range. Reconnect the aftertreatment ID module. Proceed to Test Step 4.
Test Step 4. Measure the Voltage to the 40-Pin Connector
- Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
- Disconnect the 40-pin connector.
- Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
- Measure the voltage at the 40-pin connector on the harness between the engine and the CEM from pin 1 to pin 28.
Expected Result:
The voltage should be 4.84 to 5.16 VDC.
Results:
- OK - The voltage is within the expected range. The fault is in the CEM harness.
Repair: Repair the faulty wiring or replace the faulty wiring. Use the electronic service tool to verify that the repair eliminates the fault.
STOP
- Not OK - The voltage is out of the expected range. Reconnect the 40-pin connector. Proceed to Test Step 5.
Test Step 5. Measure the Voltage at the 31-Pin Connector
- Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
- Disconnect the 31-pin connector.
- Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
- Measure the voltage at the 31-pin connector on the engine harness from pin 1 to pin 28.
Expected Result:
The voltage should be 4.84 to 5.16 VDC.
Results:
- OK - The voltage is within the expected range. The fault is in the harness between the 31-pin connector and the 40-pin connector.
Repair: Repair the faulty wiring or replace the faulty wiring. Use the electronic service tool to verify that the repair eliminates the fault.

- Not OK - The voltage is out of the expected range. The fault is in the engine harness.
Repair: Repair the faulty wiring or replace the faulty wiring. Use the electronic service tool to verify that the repair eliminates the fault.

Test Step 6. Check the Signal Wire on the CEM Harness
- Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
- Disconnect the connector for the aftertreatment ID module. Disconnect the 40-pin connector.
- Check the resistance between pin 27 on the 40-pin connector and terminal 3 on the harness connector for the aftertreatment identification module.
Results:
- The measured resistance is less than 10,000 Ohms - The CEM harness is OK. Proceed to Test Step 7.
- The resistance is more than 10,000 Ohms. - There is an open circuit in the CEM harness.
Repair: Locate the open circuit in the harness. Repair the connectors or the harness and/or replace the connectors or the harness. Ensure that all of the seals are correctly in place and ensure that the connectors are correctly coupled.Use the electronic service tool to verify that the repair eliminates the fault.
STOP
Test Step 7. Check the Signal Wire Between the 40-Pin Connector and the 31-Pin Connector
- Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
- Disconnect the 40-pin connector. Disconnect the 31-pin connector.
- Check the resistance between pin 27 on the 40-pin connector and pin 27 on the 31-pin connector.
Results:
- The measured resistance is less than 10,000 Ohms - The harness between the 40-pin connector and the 31-pin connector is OK Proceed to Test Step 8.
- The resistance is more than 10,000 Ohms. - There is an open circuit in the harness between the 40-pin connector and the 31-pin connector.
Repair: Locate the open circuit in the harness. Repair the connectors or the harness and/or replace the connectors or the harness. Ensure that all of the seals are correctly in place and ensure that the connectors are correctly coupled.Use the electronic service tool to verify that the repair eliminates the fault.

Test Step 8. Check the Signal Wire Between the 31-Pin Connector and the ECM
- Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
- Disconnect the 31-pin connector. Disconnect the P2 connector.
- Check the resistance between pin 27 on the 31-pin connector and P2:18.
Results:
- The measured resistance is less than 10,000 Ohms - The engine harness is OK Proceed to Test Step 9.
- The resistance is more than 10,000 Ohms. - There is an open circuit in the engine harness.
Repair: Locate the open circuit in the harness. Repair the connectors or the harness and/or replace the connectors or the harness. Ensure that all of the seals are correctly in place and ensure that the connectors are correctly coupled.Use the electronic service tool to verify that the repair eliminates the fault.

Test Step 9. Manually Enter the "Aftertreatment Identification Information"
Note: Factory Passwords are required for this procedure.
- Confirm that a certified CEM is installed on the engine.
- Record the "CEM serial number" and the "configuration group" from the CEM Identification Plate. The identification plate is on the panel for the electronics.
- Contact your local Caterpillar dealer for a list of approved RF and CEM configurations for your engine.
Note: Contact the Technical Communicator at a Caterpillar dealer, if necessary.
- Verify that the CEM is a certified match with the engine.
Results:
- The CEM is a certified match with the engine. -
Repair: Perform the following procedure.
- Establish communication between the electronic service tool and the ECM . Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools", if necessary.
- Navigate to the "Aftertreatment configuration" page.
- Program the "Factory Installed Aftertreatment #1 Identification Number" with the serial number from the CEM Identification Plate.
- Program the "DPF #1 Soot Loading Sensing System Configuration Code" with the "configuration group" from the CEM Identification Plate.
The code is automatically cleared.
STOP
- The CEM is not a certified match to the engine. -
Repair: Replace the CEM with a certified match to the engine. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly for removal and installation procedures. When the new CEM is installed, the aftertreatment identification module will begin communicating with the ECM and the diagnostic code will be cleared.The engine ECM will only communicate with the CEM if the total operating hours of the engine are less than 100. If the hours are greater than 100, the CEM information must be programmed into the ECM by using the electronic service tool.
