The 3408 and the 3412 replacement water pumps either new or remanufactured use a tapered roller bearing that is referenced in Engine News, SEBD9221, "Jacket Water Pumps Now Include New Tapered Roller Bearings".

Lubrication issues require that the 117-9712 Drive Idler Shaft must be used with the following pump groups:

The 117-9712 Drive Idler Shaft has an additional oil passage in order to provide an oil bath to the tapered roller bearings.

If an affected water pump is installed on an older engine that does not have the 117-9712 Drive Idler Shaft, the water pump will fail and the engine will be damaged.

Note: The remanufactured parts do not have any warnings or notices in the box about these needed changes.
