当接通压缩空气主供气时,压缩空气首先供给到中继阀 (1) 。 压缩空气主供气被中继阀封住。 中继阀允许控制气压流过软管 (2) 流入与起动马达电磁阀 (3) 相连的另一个阀。

当常闭起动马达电磁阀被触发,电磁阀将开启与其相连的阀。 此阀使得控制气压能够流到空气起动马达 (5) 内部的活塞 (11) 的背后。

此控制气压推动活塞。 活塞压缩活塞弹簧 (12) 并向外移动小齿轮 (9) 的驱动轴。 小齿轮与飞轮齿圈啮合。 等到小齿轮与飞轮齿圈完全啮合时,起动马达才开始转动。

小齿轮与飞轮齿圈啮合后,一端口打开,让控制气压流过软管 (4) 。 控制气压被引向中继阀 (1) 。 中继阀打开,这就使压缩空气的主供气能够流经进气口 (6) 。

压缩空气使叶片 (7) 和转子 (8) 旋转。 转子使用减速齿轮 (10) 来旋转小齿轮的驱动轴。 小齿轮旋转飞轮以起动发动机。

发动机起动时,飞轮转速开始超过小齿轮,飞轮齿圈开始驱动小齿轮。 小齿轮从飞轮上缩回。 这一设计可防止损坏空气起动马达、小齿轮和飞轮齿圈。

当发动机控制模块感测到盘车终止转速时,起动马达电磁阀 (3) 就会被停止通电。 电磁阀关闭了与其相连的阀,活塞 (11) 背面的空气气压被除去。 活塞弹簧 (12) 缩回活塞和小齿轮的驱动轴。

缩回的活塞 (11) 封闭了控制气压流向中继阀 (1) 的气道。 中继阀关闭,这样就关断了通向起动马达的压缩空气主供气。
