The barrels for hydraulic cylinders that are used on Caterpillar products can be finished by using different methods. The most common methods are honing and bore skiving. While honing results in the familiar crosshatch type pattern in the finish, bore skiving with roller burnishing produces a highly symmetrical bore with a surface finish that has a shiny, slightly wavy appearance. The bore skiving process has become the preferred process for most of the Caterpillar produced cylinders. Therefore, the crosshatch appearance that is normally observed will become less frequent.
