Fit
When the new seal ring is assembled, the new seal ring may appear to be loose.
The tolerance range of the seal ring may be a tight fit to a slightly loose condition. The seal ring may rotate inside the housing. The seal ring may have minimal motion in a loose fit condition.
The interference between the retainer and the seal should be enough to keep the seal ring in place during assembly. This condition should not cause damage to the toric seal during installation.
Flat Spots
Some new seal rings appear to have flat spots on the inside diameter of the metal seal ring.

View of a flat spot |
Casting gates on the inner diameter of the seal ring give the appearance of flat spots.
Casting gates are a necessary part of the casting process. Casting gates have no negative effect on the performance of the seal.
Out Of Round
Some new seal rings appear to be out of round.

View of chamfer |
The new seal ring receives a chamfer after the normal machining is completed. Because the chamfer is a separate operation, the chamfer may not always be concentric with the seal ring.
The chamfer is not required to be concentric with the seal ring. Seal rings should not be considered nonfunctional if this chamfer is not concentric with the seal ring.
