ReferenceRefer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU8456, "IT14G and IT28G Integrated Toolcarriers and 914G, 924G, 924GZ, 928G and 930G Wheel Loaders - Steering Column" for information regarding the pivots for the mechanism that tilts on the steering column and splines.
An Operation and Maintenance Manual Supplement is available for maintaining the steering column on the machines that are listed above.
Use a 297-6383 Gauge Spline (STEERING) in order to inspect the splines of the steering column. The gauge is used to determine if the spline is reusable. If the gauge slips onto the spline, then the steering column and the steering metering unit (HMU) should be replaced. Grease the splines during the replacement. If the gauge does not slip onto the spline, the splines should be cleaned and greased before being reinstalled.
Note: Use a lithium based grease on the splined steering column shaft during assembly. Caterpillar recommends using 1P-0808 Multipurpose Grease (CARTRIDGE) or 2P-9066 Lubricant .
Record the maintenance in the Service Information Management System (SIMS). Include the status of the splines that is determined by using the 297-6383 Gauge Spline (STEERING).
Install a copy of the Operation and Maintenance Manual Supplement in the machine. Inform the customer of the new inspection and maintenance intervals.
