Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Flash Program

Introduction

Perform the following procedure to flash program the ECM. The ECM is flashed to upgrade the software. Flash programming of the ECM must also be done if the ECM has been replaced. The Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat® ET) contains the program WinFlash. WinFlash is used to load software into the ECM. The following procedure is used to FLASH software into the ECM.

Connections for the Communication Adapter III and the Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) Service Tool.
The components that are needed to use the Communication Adapter III and Cat ET are:
(1) Cable
(2) 317-7484 Communication Adapter Gp
(3) 457-6114 CA3 Ethernet FLASH Cable
(4) Current version of Cat ET program software and an IBM-compatible personal computer

Note: Plus+1 Service Tool for Caterpillar software will be required in addition to Cat ET software.

Acquire the most recent version of the Cat Electronic Technician (Cat ET) Service Tool. Reference JERD2129.

Check Preparation

  1. Connect the data link cable between the communication adapter and the electronic technician.

  2. Connect the data link cable between the communication adapter and the diagnostic connector of the machine.

Check Procedure

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

  2. Ensure that the transmission direction switch is in the neutral position.

  3. Ensure that the engine is not running.

  4. Use WinFlash to load the software.

Adjustment Procedure

The program will run and display a message when the download is complete.
