Hydraulic Fan Speed - Test and Adjust

Usage:

993K Z9K

------ WARNING! ------

Rotating fan blades can result in personal injury or death.

Stop the engine and allow the fan to come to a complete stop before making any test or adjustment.

Before starting the engine, make sure all of the finger guards are installed and the guard door is closed. Do not allow any tools or test equipment to protrude or vibrate into the path of the rotating fan blades.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.

Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.

Make sure all of the work tools have been lowered to the ground, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

------ WARNING! ------

Sudden movement or accidental starting of the machine can cause personal injury or death to persons on or near the machine.

To prevent personal injury or death, perform the following:

Park the machine on a smooth, level surface.

Lower the work tool to the ground and engage the parking brake.

Stop the engine and remove the key.

Block the wheels and install the steering frame lock.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

This calibration procedure will set the signal limits for the hydraulic fan system. The signal limits are the maximum fan speed and the minimum fan speed. The calibration procedure for Testing and Adjusting the speed of the fan for the hydraulic fan system is completed through Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET).

Machine Preparation

  1. Move the machine to a smooth horizontal location. Move away from working machines and personnel. Lower the work tools to the ground.

  2. Only allow one operator on the machine. Keep all personnel away from the machine or in the view of the operator.

  3. Engage the parking brake.

  4. Place the steering frame lock in the LOCKED position.

  5. Use the 9U-7402 Multitach Tool Gp in order to check the speed of the hydraulic fan. The multitach measures the speed of the hydraulic fan by using reflective tape and a photo pickup.

Reference: Special Instruction, NEHS0605, "Tool Operating Manual (9U-7400 Multitach II Group, 9U-7401 Multitach II, 9U-7402 Multitach Photo Group)".

Note: If a piece of reflective tape is already visible on one of the fan blades, proceed to Step 6. If no reflective tape is visible on one of the fan blades, use the following procedure:

    1. Turn the engine start switch to the OFF position.

    2. Ensure that the engine start switch is in the OFF position.

    3. Remove the rear grill.

    4. Clean a small area on the surface of one fan blade near the edge. Position the 1U-6605 Reflective Tape so that the entire piece of tape is visible. Place the tape near the edge of the blade.

    5. Install the rear grill.

Photo pickup and magnetic base on the fan guard (typical example)

  6. Place photo pickup into the holder on the magnetic base. Tighten the screw. Attach the magnetic base to the fan guard assembly. Refer to Illustration 2.

  7. When the reflective tape and the photo pickup are in alignment, the LED indicator (red light) will come on. Position the photo pickup accordingly.

Note: When you start the engine, vibration of the machine may cause the photo pickup to become misaligned. Adjustment of the magnetic base may be necessary in order to realign the photo pickup.

(1) The hydraulic fan speed is at high RPM. Calibration of the Hydraulic Fan System is done through Caterpillar Electronic Technician.

Note: The minimum fan speed is 400 rpm.

  1. Connect Caterpillar ET to the machine. The ET connector is located on the control panel on the right side of the cab.

  2. Turn the engine start switch to the ON position.

  3. Open the ET software program.

  4. When ET has started, start the engine. Run the engine at high idle. Warm the hydraulic oil to normal operating temperature.
