Crankcase Explosion Relief Valve - Remove and Install

Removal Procedure


NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.


    Note: Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "General Information (Reference Material)" for more information. Refer to page 7 for torque values.

  1. Remove the bolts, cover (1), and the crankcase explosion relief valve.

  2. Remove the nuts that hold crankcase explosion relief valve (3) to cover (1). Remove the cover.

    Note: The crankcase explosion relief valve and flange (2) on earlier diesel engines are sealed with gaskets. The crankcase explosion relief valve on later diesel engines is sealed with O-ring seals.

  3. Inspect all parts. Replace any parts that are damaged.

  1. On earlier diesel engines, install new gaskets on each side of cover (1).

  2. On later diesel engines, the crankcase explosion relief valve is sealed with O-ring seals. Apply glycerin to the O-ring seals.

    Note: Ensure that the exhaust opening on crankcase explosion relief valve (3) will face downward, when cover (1) is installed.

  3. Install flange (2) and place crankcase explosion relief valve (3) in position on cover (1).

  4. Apply Tooling (B) to the O-ring seal. Install a new O-ring seal on cover (1).

  5. Apply Tooling (A) to the threads of the bolts that hold cover (1) in place. Install cover (1), the crankcase explosion relief valve, and the bolts.
