Idler Gears (Front) - Remove

Removal Procedure

Start By:

  1. Remove the water pumps. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Water Pump - Remove" and Disassembly and Assembly, "Auxiliary Water Pump - Remove".
  2. Remove the engine oil pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pump - Remove".


NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.


    Note: Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "General Information (Reference Material)" for more information.

    Note: The same procedure is used for removing the idler gears and the idler shafts on both sides. The idler gears on each side are different. The idler gears must be installed on the correct side in order to get the correct engagement with the crankshaft gear.

  1. Remove the bolts that hold idler shaft (2) in place.

    Note: DO NOT allow the gear to fall when the idler shaft is removed.

  1. Install Tooling (A) in idler shaft (2) .

  1. Use your hands in order to support idler gear (1). Tighten Tooling (A) evenly. Remove idler shaft (2) from the front housing.

  1. Remove idler gear (1) from the front housing.

  1. Remove O-ring seals (3) from idler shaft (2) .

    Note: The idler bearing in the illustration shows a groove for an internal oil supply. The new idler bearings do not have a groove for an internal oil supply.

  1. If necessary, remove bearing (4) from idler gear (1) .

  1. Remove thrust washer (5) from the front housing.
