Introduction
The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.
Problem
The Torque converter inlet relief valve comes out of the bore in the transmission control housing. This problem will cause the converter to bypass oil to the sump. This results in reduced oil flow through the converter. Reduced oil flow will cause the converter to overheat and will result in low lube oil pressure. This problem most often occurs when the oil is cold.
Solution
A positive retention for the valve can be installed. This installation will prevent the valve from coming out of the bore. The transmission control valve will need to be removed in order to perform this procedure.

Drill and tap one 5.2 mm (0.2047 inch) diameter with M6 X 1 threads (D). Make sure that all contamination is removed after the hole is tapped.

The bolt and the washer retain the relief valve. |
Install one 6V-8837 Bolt (1) and one 5P-0537 Hard Washer (2) into the tapped hole. Use 155-0695 Thread Lock Compound on the bolt threads. Tighten the bolt to a torque of 12 ± 3 N·m (8.9 ± 2 lb ft).
Note: A 6V-8214 Bolt may be substituted for the 6V-8837 Bolt if the 6V-8837 Bolt is not available.
The outside diameter of the 5P-0537 Hard Washer must be at least 2 to 4 mm behind the valve opening. The washer must not interfere with the operation of the valve.
