Introduction

This Technical Information Bulletin replaces the August 14, 2007 TIB, "Product Link Registration Problems" Disregard the August 14, 2007 TIB. Refer to the following information.

This information addresses process implementation problems with provisioning the 263-9088 Communication Radio Group (PRODUCT LINK 121SR). The 263-9088 Communication Radio Group (PRODUCT LINK 121SR) is commonly known as the Product Link 121SR or PL121SR. Provisioning is the process of supplying the identification number of the radio components to the satellite network provider. These identification numbers authorize communication between the PL121SR and the communication satellites. The information contained in this article can help a technician diagnose problems with a PL121SR that does not communicate upon initial installation.

Note: The 263-9088 Communication Radio Group (PRODUCT LINK 121SR) is an integral component of the PL321SR system.

Problem

Some Product Link modules have been released into the parts system without being properly provisioned. When a PL121SR that is not provisioned tries to send a registration message over the network, the network will send back a command to the module that prohibits the module from transmitting. The procedure that is required to allow the module to communicate again varies depending on the level of software that is installed on the module.

Solution

Effective immediately, 100 percent of the PL121SR units will be inspected at time of manufacture in order to ensure that the units are provisioned properly. If you have installed a PL121SR that would not communicate with the network, please take the following steps before you return the unit.

If you are experiencing difficultly with registering a new PL121SR/PL321SR installation, please follow the steps that are outlined below before returning the unit as defective.

  1. Leave the PL121SR/PL321SR unit installed in the machine.

Note: If it is necessary to remove the unit from the machine, use Caterpillar Electronic Technician® (ET) to obtain a screenshot of the "ECM Summary" prior to removing the unit. The information in the screenshot will provide the information that is required in Step 2.

  1. Determine the level of software that is installed on the PL121SR. Use ET.

  1. Record the ID number of the module. This will be a 12 character number starting with DQ and followed by 10 numbers.

Note: The number will be found on film (1) that is located on the side of the module. The number is identified in ET as "Wireless Transmission Device Serial Number".

  1. Contact your dealer's Technical Communicator in order to submit this information to the Dealer Service Network (DSN).

Include the following information in order to determine if provisioning is the cause:

    • The version number of the sofware

    • The part number of the software

    • Module ID number

A Product Link analyst will take the corrective action if provisioning is required.
