Flywheel Housing - Remove and Install

Start By:

  1. Remove the crankshaft rear seal. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankshaft Rear Seal - Remove".
  2. Remove the electric starter motor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Electric Starter Motor - Remove".
  3. Remove the engine control module. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Control Module - Remove and Install".


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.



NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

  1. Remove bolts (1) that fasten the engine oil pan onto flywheel housing (2) .

  1. Disconnect tube assemblies (4) .

  1. Remove bolts (3) .

  1. Remove bolt (6) .

  1. Disconnect tube assemblies (5) and reposition tube assemblies (5) out of the way.

  1. Install Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device on flywheel housing (2) .

  1. Remove bolts (7). Remove flywheel housing (2) from the cylinder block. The weight of flywheel housing (2) is approximately 27 kg (60 lb).

  1. Remove seal (8) and seal (9) from flywheel housing (2) .

NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.


Note: Check the O-ring seals, the gaskets, and the seals for wear or for damage. Replace the components, if necessary.

  1. Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of the flywheel housing and the cylinder block.

  1. Install Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device on flywheel housing (2). The weight of flywheel housing (2) is approximately 27 kg (60 lb).

  1. Apply Tooling (B) on seal (8) and seal (9). Install seal (8) and seal (9) in flywheel housing (2) .

    Note: Apply Tooling (B) to the bottom of seal (9) in order to fill the space at the cylinder block, the flywheel housing, and the engine oil pan.

  1. Use Tooling (A) in order to position flywheel housing (2) on the cylinder block. Install bolts (7) and remove Tooling (A) .

  1. Tighten the bolts, as follows:

    1. In a numerical sequence, tighten Bolt 1 through Bolt 9 to a torque of 100 ± 20 N·m (30 ± 15 lb ft).

    1. In a numerical sequence, tighten Bolt 10 through Bolt 24 to a torque of 40 ± 10 N·m (30 ± 7 lb ft).

    1. In a numerical sequence, again tighten Bolt 1 through Bolt 9 to a torque of 135 ± 20 N·m (100 ± 15 lb ft).

    1. In a numerical sequence, again tighten Bolt 10 through Bolt 24 to a torque of 55 ± 10 N·m (40 ± 7 lb ft).

  1. Position tube assemblies (5) and connect tube assemblies (5).

  1. Install bolt (6) .

  1. Connect tube assemblies (4) and install bolts (3) .

  1. Install bolts (1) that fasten the engine oil pan onto flywheel housing (2) .

End By:

  1. Install the electric starting motor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Electric Starting Motor - Remove and Install".
  2. Install the crankshaft rear seal. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankshaft Rear Seal - Install".
  3. Install the engine control module. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Control Module - Remove and Install".
