Introduction

Do not perform any procedure in this document until you read this information and you understand this information. The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.

Problem

Some remanufactured water pumps have been assembled with an insufficient torque. The insufficient torque is on the bolt that fastens the impeller to the shaft. The insufficient torque may cause the impeller to come loose during operation. This could cause the water pump not to work properly. Engine overheating may also occur if the water pump does not work properly.

Solution

(1) The bolt for the Impeller

The following part numbers are the water pumps that may have an insufficient torque on the bolt for the impeller.

Check the date code on the box of the remanufactured water pumps that are listed above. If the date code is January 2007, then the torque for the bolt (1) should be checked. Secure the drive gear before you torque the bolt (1). Securing the drive gear will prevent the shaft from turning while the bolt is being torqued. Make sure that the bolt (1) is torqued to 39 ± 3 N·m (28 ± 2 lb ft).

Note: The format for the date code is explained below. DDMMYYXXX. DD is equal to the day of the month. MM is equal to the month of the year. YY is equal to the year. XXX is equal to the number of the plant. The number of the plant is the plant that assembled the water pump. For example if the date code is 010107068 then the date code indicates that the water pump was manufactured on 1January 2007 at plant 068.
