Procedure to Install Primary and Secondary Steering Monitoring System

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from machine articulation or movement.

Machine frames can move and a person can be crushed.

Connect the steering frame lock link between the front and rear frames before working on machine.

Do not disconnect the lock link until the machine is made operational and the commissioning procedure is completed.

----------------------

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from escaping fluid under pressure.

Escaping fluid under pressure, even a very small pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue, causing serious injury, and possible death.

Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak.

Do not check for pin hole leaks in pump or motor hoses during a steer stall condition.

If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated by a doctor familiar with this type of injury immediately.

----------------------

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Move the machine to a smooth horizontal location that is away from operating machines and away from personnel.

  1. Engage the parking brake. Place wheel blocks in front of the wheels and behind the wheels.

  1. Install the steering frame lock.

  1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the OFF position.

  1. Ensure all oil pressure is released before any fitting, hose or component is loosened, tightened, removed, or adjusted.

Primary/Secondary Steering Indicator - Steering System Failure (23) - This indicator will be on when there is a steering system failure in either the primary or secondary steering systems. Stop the machine immediately and investigate the cause.

Note: The secondary steering system only operates while the machine is moving.

NOTICE

If the primary/secondary steering indicator flashes, cease operation, quickly move the machine to a safe area and shut the machine down. Inspect and rectify the cause of the problem before recommencing operation.
