Introduction
This Special Instruction provides information on the operation of Caterpillar Product Link System (PL151/201).
This Special Instruction is a supplement to the machine's Operation and Maintenance Manual. This document must be permanently attached to the machine's Operation and Maintenance Manual.
Safety Section
Operation of the machine and maintenance of the machine must not occur unless the instructions and warnings in the machines have been read. Please refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for instructions and warnings. The contents of the Special Instruction must be understood by the machine operator before a machine can be operated that is equipped with the Caterpillar Product Link System.
DO NOT OPERATE OR WORK ON THIS MACHINE UNLESS YOU HAVE READ AND UNDERSTAND THE INSTRUCTIONS AND WARNINGS IN THE OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUALS. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS OR HEED THE WARNINGS COULD RESULT IN INJURY OR DEATH. CONTACT ANY CATERPILLAR DEALER FOR REPLACEMENT MANUALS. PROPER CARE IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. |
Safety Signs and Labels

This warning label is located in the cab. The warning label is fastened to the dash or to another area of the cab that is visible to the operator.

This machine is equipped with a Caterpillar Product Link radio communication device which must be deactivated within 6.0 m (20 ft) of a blast zone. Failure to do so could result in serious injury or death. |
Normally, blast zone disconnect switches are not required. Local mine regulations typically require a safe blast zone operating distance that exceeds those specified for Product Link. However, this switch provides a more convenient means to disable Product Link while still being able to operate the machine.
If the machine is required to work within 6.0 m (20 ft) of a blast area, then the operator must take one of the following precautions:
- Disconnect the Product Link Module from the power source by disconnecting the wiring harness at the Product Link module.
- Temporarily remove the Product Link module from the machine.
- Add an "ON/OFF" switch and the "BLAST ZONE " label in order to allow the Product Link module to be turned off from the cab.
Note: The keyswitch must be placed in the "OFF" position BEFORE placing the Product Link disconnect switch in the "OFF" position. Failure to do so may cause current parameters (SMH, location, etc.) to be lost and/or corrupted.
Note: When the Product Link disconnect switch is in the "OFF" position, no communication (SMH, location, level 1/2/3 events, product watches) between the machine and EquipmentManager will take place.
Note: Any outgoing messages in the queue will be lost when the blast zone switch is placed in the "OFF" position.
Note: While the blast zone switch is in the "OFF" position, the PL121/PL321 will no longer track SMH hours. Periodic SMH adjustments will be required.
Consult your Caterpillar Dealer if there are any questions.
This warning does not supersede the published requirements and regulations found in "Title 30 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR)". Every mine operator should conduct their own hazard assessments and meet all of the requirements of "Title 30 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR)" in order to ensure safe operation in the storage, transportation, loading, and blasting of explosives.
The following Product Link specifications are provided to aid in conducting hazard assessments and ensuring compliance with all local regulations.
Product Link Transmitter Power: 5 Watts
Product Link Operating Frequency Range: 148 - 150 MHz
Operation Section
The Product Link is a satellite communication device that transmits information regarding the machine back to Caterpillar, Caterpillar Dealers and Customers. The unit contains a Global Positioning System and a satellite transmitter/receiver. The Product Link is compatible with the communication protocol that is used on the CAT data link. All logged events and diagnostic codes that are available to the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) on the CAT data link can be sent to the satellite. The Product Link is not compatible with the communication protocol that is used on the ATA data link for on-highway trucks.
The system is capable of two-way communication between the machine and a remote user (the dealer or customer). At any time, a user can request updated information from a machine. Also, the system parameters for the Product Link module can be changed. The information goes from the machine to a satellite. Then, the information goes to the ground station. The receiving station transmits the data to Caterpillar. The information can then be sent to Caterpillar Dealers and Customers. The complete operation, installation, setup and troubleshooting of the Product Link System is documented in the System Operation Manual RENR5885, "Product Link 151/201".
