This Special Instruction provides information for the installation of the electronic components of the single mast and dual mast AccuGrade Laser System.
If you are installing a single mast system, the mast must be installed on the center of the blade.
The operation of the AccuGrade - Laser System is covered in the Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU8161, "AccuGrade Laser (CD610)". Refer to that manual for more information.

Mount the 253-8329 Laser Receiver Gp
- Slide the 253-8329 Laser Receiver Gp (11) onto the 226-2333 Mast As (15) .
To prevent possible personal injury during installation and removal of the laser receivers, lower the mast to the minimum height and use an approved access system to reach the mounting locations of the laser receivers at the top of the mast. Do not climb on the blade. |

Mount the 234-9970 Receiver Mounting Gp and the 226-2333 Mast Gp to the Blade
- Mount one of the 234-9970 Receiver Mounting Gp (16) to the center mounting plate (19) with four 8T-4648 Bolts and four 8T-4223 Hard Washers (13). Torque the 8T-4648 Bolts to 100 ± 20 N·m (74 ± 15 lb ft). Refer to Illustration 3 and Illustration 4.
Note: The 234-9970 Receiver Mounting Gp for your application may have only one bolt hole in the center. In this case, refer to Illustration 5. Use one 9S-1362 Bolt (14) and 3B-4512 Lockwasher . Torque the 237-7252 Bolt to 305 N·m (225 lb ft).

- Remove the two bolts (17) and the bracket (B) .

Note: Ensure that the 234-9970 Receiver Mounting Gp is oriented in order to allow the motor housing (A) on the electric mast (15) to face the rear of the machine. Refer to Illustration 6.
- Place the 226-2333 Mast As (15) into the 234-9970 Receiver Mounting Gp (16) .

- Reinstall the bracket (B) that was removed in Step 2 and tighten the two bolts (17) to 9 N·m (79 lb in).
- Install the bolt (18) through the bracket (21) into the bottom of the 226-2333 Mast As (15) .
Torque the bolt to 305 N·m (225 lb ft).
- Remove the two 13 mm (1/2 inch) bolts (20) that secure the bracket (21) to the 234-9970 Receiver Mounting Gp (16) .

The bolts that secure the U-bracket to the shock mounts are not tightened to specification. Failure to perform the following procedure may result in damage to the electric mast or shock mounts. |

- Apply 9S-3263 Thread Lock Compound to the two 13 mm (1/2 inch) bolts (20) .
- Reinstall the two 13 mm (1/2 inch) bolts (20) into the U-bracket (21) and tighten the bolts to 54 N·m (40 lb ft).
- Repeat Steps 1 through Steps 8 in order to install the 234-9970 Receiver Mounting Gp (16) and the 226-2333 Mast As (15) onto the right hand mounting plate.
Note: Only mount the center shock mount on a Single Mast system.
Installation of the 252-8744 Films

Place a 252-8744 Film on the 226-2333 Mast As that will be used with the laser. Stand between the machine and the blade of the machine and place the 252-8744 Film onto the rear of the mast at eye level.
Connect the Coiled Cables to the 226-2333 Mast As and 253-8329 Laser Receiver Gp
- Connect the ninety degree connectors of the 240-0768 Coiled Cables (19) to the bottom connectors of the 226-2333 Mast As (15) .

- Connect the quick disconnect connectors of the 240-0768 Coiled Cables to the connectors on the radiator guard (20). The connector for the right hand mast connects to the right hand connector (A) on the radiator guard. The connector for the center mast connects to the left hand connector (B) on the radiator guard.

- Connect connector (18) of the 276-0764 Coiled Cables to the top connector of the 226-2333 Mast As (15) to the connector on the 253-8329 Laser Receiver Gp (11) .
Mount the 283-9530 Monitor Display Gp
Note: If the full ARO kit is already installed, start at Step 5.
- Remove the 255-4231 Cab Cover Gp from the dash panel.
- Install the 255-4262 Bracket As (22) with the 138-8454 Screws (21) .

Display

Display Registration and Activation
The AccuGrade display must be registered and activated by the dealer before it can be used. When you register the display, you will receive a unique registration key. Use the key in order to activate the display. This registration process will allow for the display to be upgraded as new versions of software are released.
Refer to the following steps in order to obtain the registration key for the display.
- Record the serial number from the identification plate that is located on the display.
- Proceed to the following web site: "www.techproductregistration.com"
- Complete the registration form that is located on the web site.
- In the "Product Family" field, select "AccuGrade".
- In the "Activity Type" field, select "Product Registration".
- In the "Reason" field, select "New Install".
- In the "System" field, select the appropriate system for the type of display.
- In the "Version" field, select the version of software.
- In the "Display Serial Number" field, enter the serial number of your display.
Note: Make sure that the serial number is correctly entered into the form.
- In the "Order By Information" section, complete the following:
- Select your "Dealer Code" from the list.
- In the "Contact Name" field, enter the name of person that is receiving the registration key.
- In the "Phone Number" field, enter the phone number of the person that is to receive the registration key.
- In the "Email" field, enter the e-mail address of person that is to receive the registration key.
- In the "Customer Information" section, complete the following:
- Enter the name of the company into the "Company Name" field.
- Enter the contact name of the customer into the "Contact Name" field.
- Enter the phone number of the customer into the "Phone No." field.
- Enter the e-mail address of the customer into the "Email" field.
- In the "Machine Information" section, enter the following:
- In the "Machine Model" field, enter the model of the machine that the display is being installed into.
- In the "Machine Serial Number" field, enter the serial number of the machine that the display is being installed in.
- If access to the web site is not available, call 888-223-7539 in order to manually register the product.
- When the data fields are complete, select "Submit" on the form.
You will be asked to review the data.
- Review the information.
- Press the "Confirm" key.
Within thirty minutes an e-mail message will be sent to the dealer e-mail address that was entered into the form. This e-mail message will have the option key that is used in order to activate the option on the requested display. A phone call will be made to the phone number that was submitted on the form in order to confirm that the e-mail message with the option key was received. Provide the key to the appropriate person so that the key can be installed on the display. Save the information that pertains to option key for future reference. An invoice will be sent from Antares for the purchase of the option key.
- Provide the registration key to the appropriate person so that the key can be entered into the display.
Save this information for future reference.
Enter the Registration Key into the Display
- Turn the key start switch to the "ON" position in order to power up the display.
- Press the menu key (6) .
- Use the arrow keys (1) in order to select "Advanced Option" from the "Configuration" menu.

- Verify that the key was entered correctly.
- Verify that the serial number on the identification plate of the display is identical to the electronic serial number.
Enabling Electrohydraulic Access
In order for the AccuGrade system to operate in automatic mode, the electrohydraulic system may need to be set as installed. Use a software enabled attachment (SEA) in order to activate the automatic controls. Refer to the price list for the machine in order to verify if an SEA is required. If an SEA is required refer to Special Instruction, REHS1238, "Obtaining Factory Password and Software Enabled Attachments".
Below is an example of the location of the "AccuGrade E/H SEA" within Cat ET. Refer to Illustration 21.

Setup of a Single Mast System
The display's default settings are configured for the Motor Grader. You must use the following procedure in order to configure the display for use with the single mast system. If you are installing a dual mast system, proceed to the ""Setup of a Dual Mast System" ".
Configure the Display for Operation of a Single Mast System
- Press the menu key (6) .
- Perform the following procedure in order to enter the "Installation" menu. Refer to Illustration 22.
Perform the functions simultaneously in the order that is listed below.
- Press and hold down the "ESC/left reset" key (A) .
- Press and hold the right down arrow Key (B) .
- Press and hold down the "Increment" key (C) .
- Release all of the keys simultaneously.
This causes the "Installation" menu to be shown on the LCD screen.

Automatic Valve Calibration
This calibration will guide the user through the required actions in order to perform an automatic valve calibration on the single mast system. The following menus are used

- "Calibration Status"
- "Exit-Success"
- "Exit-Error" (not shown in this document)
The "Exit-Success" screen is displayed when a successful automatic valve calibration is completed. The "Exit-Error" screen will display a description of the error that occurred while performing the automatic valve calibration.

The top banner of the display shows the text that is listed below:
"<- Auto Valve Calibration" - This message is displayed for auto calibration of the lift valve.
Only the information for the sensor that is being used in the calibration is displayed during the calibration. After selection, both the upper calibration and the lower calibration limits are displayed. The "OK/right reset" key (8) is used in order to continue the calibration. The "ESC/left reset" key (7) is used in order to abort the calibration. The activity indicator is animated in order to convey to the user that a sensor signal is available and that the calibration is in process, even if you do not observe any blade motion.
The user can press the "ESC/left reset" key (7) on any screen of the automatic valve calibration wizard to terminate the calibration that is in process. If the user is in the "Calibration Status" screen, this action shows the "Exit-Error" Screen, with the text "Abort". In all of the other screens, the user is returned to the "Valve Calibration" menu.
Procedure
- Start the machine and allow the hydraulic oil to reach the normal operating temperature.
- The engine speed should be set at high idle.
- Set up a laser transmitter.
Note: The tripod and the laser should be located at least 46 m (150 ft) away from the machine. The laser should be located in an area where the laser will not detect reflections or any light source that could disrupt the laser. Set the height of the tripod and the laser transmitter so that the laser beam will strike the laser receiver when the receiver is positioned correctly on the machine. Set the laser high enough so that the cab of the machine will not stop the laser beam from being detected by the laser receiver.
Note: Avoid extending the electronic masts further than one-third of the total distance that the masts can be extended. This procedure will ensure a greater accuracy during calibration.
- Raise the blade approximately 30 cm (12 inch) off the ground.
- Press the menu key (6) .
- Perform the following procedure in order to enter the "Installation" menu. Refer to Illustration 33.
You must perform the functions simultaneously in the order as listed below.
- Press and hold down the "ESC/left reset" key (A) .
- Press and hold the right down arrow Key (B) .
- Press and hold down the increment key (C) .
- Release all of the keys simultaneously.
This causes the "Installation" menu to be shown on the LCD screen.

- Use the machine's control lever in order to lower the blade until the laser strike indicator (52) is within the "valid limit range" (51). Once a valid limit is achieved "OK" will be shown in the lower right of the "<- Auto Valve Calibration" message screen.

Note: The user must successfully set the lower limit before continuing to the next screen. You can press any switch on the display except the "OK/right reset" key (8) and the arrow keys (1) in order to abort the automatic valve calibration. The "Exit-Error" screen is displayed with the text "Abort" when you abort the calibration. If an error is detected, the "Exit-Error" Screen is displayed. The possible causes of errors are listed below:
- No Sensor information
- The Limit Measurement is too close to the sensor rail.
- Unstable Laser Transmitter

- Set the upper limit.
- Use the machine's control lever in order to raise the blade until the laser strike indicator (52) is within the valid limit range (51). Once a valid limit is achieved "OK" will be shown in the lower right of the "<- Auto Valve Calibration" message screen.

The default settings of the display are configured for the Motor Grader. You must use the following procedure in order to configure the display for use with the dual mast system. If you are installing a single mast system, proceed to the ""Single Mast System - Setup" ".
Configure the Display for Dual Mast Operation

- Perform the following procedure in order to enter the "Installation" menu. Refer to Illustration 42.

Linked Elevation Calibration
A linked elevation calibration is necessary in order to measure and record the elevation difference between the right mast mount and the left mast mount. The AccuGrade system uses this measurement in order to compensate for the difference in height between the mast mounts.
The "Linked Elevation Calibration" menu is available only when the operating mode is configured as "Linked Elevation".
Note: A laser transmitter and a level are required in order to complete the linked elevation calibration.
Perform the following steps in order to complete the linked elevation calibration.
- Set up the laser transmitter so the laser beam is at a zero percent grade and a zero percent cross slope. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for the laser transmitter instructions on setting the grade and cross slope.
Note: Caterpillar recommends the use of a laser transmitter with the following features: automatic self-leveling mode, 600 rpm min rotational speed and automatic out of level shutoff. Read the operator manual and follow the operator manual that is supplied with the laser transmitter. The tripod and the laser should be located at least 46 m (150 ft) away from the machine. The laser should be located in an area that the laser will not detect reflections or any light source that could disrupt the laser. Set the height of the tripod and the laser transmitter so that the laser beam will strike the laser receiver when the receiver is positioned correctly on the machine. Set the laser high enough so that the cab of the machine will not stop the laser beam from being detected by the laser receiver.
Never look into a laser beam or point the beam into the eyes of other people. Set the laser at a height that prevents the beam from flashing directly into people's eyes. |
- Ensure that the masts are at the lower limit.
Note: Keep the height of the laser receivers as low as possible. This will help ensure greater system accuracy during calibration of the AccuGrade System.
- Raise the blade approximately 30 cm (12 inch). Ensure that there is enough room in order to use a level under the edge of the blade.

- Place blocks under the blade before checking the blade level.

Automatic Valve Calibration Wizard
This calibration wizard will guide the user through the required actions for performing an automatic valve calibration. The following menus are used.

- "Confirm Start"
- "Calibration Status"
- "Exit-Success"
- "Exit-Error" (not shown in this document)
The "Exit-Success" screen is displayed when a successful automatic valve calibration is completed. The "Exit-Error" screen will display a description of the automatic valve calibration error.

The top banner of the display shows the text that is listed below:
"<- Auto Valve Calibration" - This message is displayed when the lift valve is calibrated.
"Auto Valve Calibration ->" - This message is displayed when the tilt valve is calibrated.
Only the information for the sensor that is used in the calibration is displayed during the calibration. After selection, both the upper calibration and the lower calibration limits are displayed. The "OK/right reset" key (8) is used in order to continue the calibration process. The "ESC/left reset" key (7) is used in order to abort the calibration process. The activity indicator is animated in order to convey to the user that a sensor signal is available and that the calibration is in progress even if you do not observe any blade motion.
The user can press the "ESC/left reset" key (7) on any screen of the Automatic Valve Calibration Wizard to terminate the calibration in progress. If the user is in the Calibration Status screen, this action shows the "Exit-Error" Screen, with the text "Abort". In all other screens, the user is returned to the "Valve Calibration" menu.
Procedure
- Start the machine and allow the hydraulic oil to reach the normal operating temperature.
- The engine speed should be set at high idle.
- Set up a laser transmitter.

Note: Avoid extending the electric masts further than one-third of the total distance that the masts can be extended in order to ensure a greater accuracy during calibration.

- Use the machine's control lever in order to lower the blade until the laser strike indicator (52) is within the valid limit range (51). Once a valid limit is achieved "OK" will be shown in the lower right of the "<- Auto Valve Calibration" message screen.
- Press the "OK/right reset" key (8) in order to continue.
Note: The user must successfully set the lower limit before continuing to the next screen. You can press any switch on the display except the "OK/right reset" key (8) and the arrow keys (1) in order to abort the automatic valve calibration. The "Exit-Error" screen is displayed with the text "Abort" when you abort the calibration. If an error is detected, the "Exit-Error" Screen is displayed. The possible causes of errors are listed below:

Operation and Maintenance Manual
Locate the Operation and Maintenance Manual, SMBU8161, "Multi Language CD". Print the Operation and Maintenance Manual in the desired language. Secure the manual to the inside of the cab.
