Introduction

This Special Instruction provides information that is used in order to perform an update from a 244-1717 MS980C GPS Receiver to the 291-1913 MS990C GPS Receiver . Update the Display software to version 6.11 or later. The 291-1913 MS990C GPS Receiver cannot be used with version 5.51 of the Display software.

Do not perform any procedure that is outlined in this publication or order any parts until you fully understand this information.

Factors to Consider when Upgrading to MS990C GPS Receivers

MS980C

If an MS980C GPS Receiver and an MS990C GPS Receiver are utilized on the same machine, then the MS980C receiver needs to be updated to version 1.37 firmware. The version 1.37 firmware is available on the download page for SIS web. The name of the file is "MS980137.s".

Note: CD550A displays that use the version 6.11 of the AccuGrade software do not support mixed MS980C and MS990C operation.

Radio

The MS990C requires that the AccuGrade machine radio use the version of software that is listed here:

  • TC900C radios need to have version 3.14 or later.

  • TC450C radios need to have version 1.28 or later

AccuGrade

When installing MS990C on an AccuGrade version 10 system, update the CD700 to version 10.01.

When installing the MS990C on an AccuGrade version 6.1 system, update the CD550A to version 6.11.

SPS850 Base

When setting up the Base and the radio, any of the radios in the following list may be used:

  • the internal radio of the base

  • a SNB900

  • a TC900B

When an SPS850 Internal Radio or an SNB900 is used, the CMR bytes do not need to be limited. However, if a B-model radio is used, then set the following limits:

  • Kea with 2 way data: Set the limit to 204 bytes

  • IP (Traditional or EasyIP) with 2 way data: Set the limit to 188 bytes

  • Kea Network with no data: Put the radio in Turbo Mode

Note: The number of bytes can only be limited by using the PC interface via the Ethernet cable.

Required Tools

The following tools will be required to install the AccuGrade GPS receivers. The list below contains the service tools that are recommended by Caterpillar.

Table 1
Part Number     Description
199-6156     Metric Wrench Set (Socket) (1/2 inch Drive)
8T-9293     Torque Wrench (1/2 inch Drive)
9S-3263     Thread Lock Compound

Important Safety Information

Work safely. Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs. A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person should also have the necessary training, skills, and tools in order to perform these functions properly. Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this instruction and on the product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons. Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance that might involve a potential hazard. Therefore, the warnings in this publication and the warnings that are on the product are not all inclusive. If a tool, a procedure, a work method, or an operating technique that is not specifically recommended by Caterpillar is used, then ensure that it is safe for you and for other people to use. You should ensure that the product will not be damaged or the product will be made unsafe by the operation, lubrication, maintenance or the repair procedures that are used.

------ WARNING! ------

If the system is in Automatic Mode, blade movement may occur.

Ensure that the system is in Manual Mode.

Personal injury or death from crushing could occur if the system is not in Manual Mode.

----------------------

------ WARNING! ------

In order to prevent personal injury during installation and removal of the GPS receivers, use an approved access system in order to reach the mounting locations of the GPS receivers at the top of the masts. Do not climb on the machine.

----------------------

Procedure

  1. Using an approved access system, remove the 244-1717 MS980C GPS Receiver from the mast on the blade.
