Introduction
The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.
Problem
The required 30 month service replacement, as specified in Caterpillar publications Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU8144-02, "Uninterruptible Power Supply 150-300 SMS 3.0" and Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7745-02, "Uninterruptible Power Supply Ranger 1200 KVA" regarding the UPS Flywheel bearing, has historically not been adhered to.
Solution
The recent software upgrade 3.30 and 3.31 contain new data fields and alarm functions, which will alert the end user for the need to replace the UPS Flywheel bearings due to the 30 month time period expiring. The software enhancement does not inhibit the other bearing alarm functions or override these same alarm functions.
Procedure
When performing software upgrade 3.30 and 3.31 and any successive software upgrade, a bearing replacement, or commissioning procedure to the UPS, you will be required to provide bearing installation data. The software will prompt you for this data via User Command "Set Bearing Install Date". The "Set Bearing Install Date" User Command will prompt you to enter Bearing Install Year, Bearing Install Month, and Bearing Install Day. The UPS will not go "on-line" unless, a valid and accurate Bearing Installation Date is entered. As a result of an improper Bearing Installation date, a red text message will appear on the UPSView software screen stating, "Invalid Bearing Install Date".
In the event that the UPS experiences a bearing related shutdown fault (i.e. Excessive Vibration or Temperature), the software will now require that the UPS Flywheel bearings be changed and a new Bearing Installation date is entered.
For instances other than the commissioning procedure for the UPS, where you do not know the Bearing Installation date, contact the Active Power Service Engineer at 1- (800) 288-5081 or apservice@activepower.com to obtain the effective Bearing Installation date.
