停机过程中,发动机机油压力下降,但涡轮增压器的叶轮还在旋转,此时蓄能器 (2) 可向涡轮增压器轴承提供润滑。 这有助于增加涡轮增压器 (1) 的使用寿命。

起动后,发动机机油压力上升,加压的机油从发动机缸体向上流经供油管 (4) 。 机油经单向阀 (3) 流向蓄能器 (2) 。

蓄能器具有一个充满氮气的蓄能室 (6) 。 阀 (7) 用来向蓄能室充氮气和测量蓄能室内的气压。

活塞 (5) 的移动受压差驱使。 蓄能室下部的氮气将活塞向上推。 发动机运转过程中,发动机机油压力会高于氮气压力。 加压的发动机机油将活塞向下推。 蓄能室的上部充注机油,直到机油压力与氮气压力相等为止。

活塞的外径装有密封,以防止气或油在蓄能器的上下部分之间穿流。 发动机运转期间,蓄能室的上部一直保持充注机油。

当发动机停机时,氮气压力会高于发动机机油压力。 向上推动活塞,迫使机油离开上部蓄能室。

供油管有一个单向阀,关闭来自发动机缸体的油道。 这就防止了来自蓄能器的机油回流缸体。 机油被引向涡轮增压器。 润滑涡轮增压器轴承后,机油经后壳体排入曲轴箱。

来自蓄能器的机油持续润滑涡轮增压器,直到氮气将活塞推到顶,来自蓄能室的供油耗尽为止。
