Start By:

  1. Remove the hood panels and the side doors. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hood Panel and Side Doors - Remove and Install".

  2. Remove the cab. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Cab - Remove".

  3. Remove the front drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive Shaft (Front) - Remove and Install".

  4. Remove the center drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive Shaft (Center) - Remove and Install".

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.

Note: Put identification marks on all lines, on all hoses, on all harness assemblies, and on all tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, hoses, and tubes. This helps to prevent fluid loss and this helps to keep contaminants from entering the system.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.

Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.

Make sure all of the work tools have been lowered to the ground, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

  1. Drain the hydraulic tank into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities".

  2. Drain the transmission oil into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities".

  3. Close the fuel supply valve.

  29. Attach Tooling (B) and a suitable lifting device to the transmission and torque converter (41). The weight of the transmission and torque converter (41) is approximately 862 kg (1900 lb).

  30. Use Tooling (B) and the suitable lifting device to slightly raise engine (40) and the transmission and torque converter (41) in order to install suitable blocking between oil pan (43) and the frame.

  31. Gently lower engine (40) and the transmission and torque converter (41) until oil pan (43) is resting on the suitable blocking.

Note: The suitable blocking will be used to support engine (40) when the transmission and torque converter (41) are removed. The combined weight of the transmission and torque converter (41) and engine (40) must not be supported by oil pan (43). It is important to maintain sufficient tension on Tooling (B) and the suitable lifting device in order to prevent damage to oil pan (43).

  32. Remove bolts (37) and reposition brackets (38).

  33. Remove bolts (42).
