UPS 1000S/ UPS 1200S Uninterruptible Power Supplys Caterpillar

Component Overview and Operation Overview

Usage:

ES12F CZE
The UPS 1200 uses flywheels in order to store energy mechanically in the form of a rotating mass. During a utility power interruption, the UPS 1200 converts mechanical energy that is stored in the flywheels that are spinning, into electrical energy. This energy is supplied to the external load until one of the following conditions occur:

  • If there is an emergency standby generator available, the generator will assume the load.

  • The utility power is restored.

  • The flywheel runs out of energy.

Once the utility power returns, the system transfers the load back to utility power without interruption. The UPS 1200 can be used in a wide range of commercial power applications. The system provides voltage regulation and protection from power outages. This provides regulated power in order to cover critical loads during sags, surges, or outages.

3-Wire UPS Components

The major components that configure a typical 3-Wire UPS 1200 are shown in Illustration 1.

Illustration 1g01264920

The major 3-Wire UPS system components and the cabinets in which the components are located are shown in the following list:

  • Input Circuit Breaker K1 (Input/Output Cabinet)

  • Bypass Static Switch (Static Switch Cabinet)

  • Line Static Switch (Static Switch Cabinet)

  • Line Inductor (Static Switch Cabinet)

  • Inverter 1 Contactor K3 (Controls Cabinet)

  • Inverter 2 Contactor K4 (Controls Cabinet)

  • Filter Inductors (Controls Cabinet)

  • Utility Inverter 1 (Inverter Cabinet)

  • Utility Inverter 2 (Inverter Cabinet)

  • Output K5 (Input/Output Cabinet)

Note: K5 with the Maintenance Bypass is an output circuit breaker.

Note: K5 without the Maintenance Bypass and with output isolation, K5 is an output isolation switch.

Note: If there is no output isolation, then there is not a switch or a breaker.

Each Flywheel Cabinet contains the following components:

  • DC Disconnect Switch

  • Flywheel A Inverter

  • Flywheel B Inverter

  • Flywheel A

  • Flywheel B

Become familiar with the following information about the components: designations and locations in the system. The system records messages that refer to these components and the operating states of these components. The system displays these messages.

The DC Bus is common to the Inverter Cabinet and the Flywheel Cabinets that make up the system. The DC Bus is located in the wireway above the inverter and Flywheel Cabinets. Each Flywheel Cabinet has an internal DC disconnect switch that is manually operated. This switch is used in order to isolate the Flywheel Cabinet from the rest of the system. The Flywheel Cabinet must be isolated for safety precautions when the Flywheel Cabinet is being serviced.

4-Wire UPS Components

The major components that configure a typical 4-Wire UPS 1200 are shown in Illustration 2.

  • Inverter 2 Contactor K4 (Controls Cabinet)

  • Filter Inductors (Controls Cabinet)

  • Utility Inverter 1 (Inverter Cabinet)

  • Utility Inverter 2 (Inverter Cabinet)

  • Output K5 (Input/Output Cabinet)

Note: K5 is a motorized output circuit breaker.

Note: K5 without Maintenance Bypass and with output isolation, K5 is an output isolation switch.

Note: If there is no output isolation, then there is not a switch or a breaker.

  • Transformer Cabinet with Delta/ZigZag transformer

  • Output Cabinet with 4-Wire Output Breaker K8

Each Flywheel Cabinet contains the following components:

  • DC Disconnect Switch

  • Inverter (Flywheel A)

  • Inverter (Flywheel B)

  • Flywheel A

  • Flywheel B

Become familiar with the following information about the components: designations and locations in the system. The system records messages that refer to these components and the operating states of these components. The system displays these messages.

The DC Bus is common to the Inverter Cabinet and all the Flywheel Cabinets that make up the system.
