When servicing or repairing electric power generation equipment:

Make sure the unit is off-line (disconnected from utility and/or other generators power service), and either locked out or tagged DO NOT OPERATE. Remove all fuses.

The "Enter User Name" / "Password" dialog box

  1. Connect a PC to the RS-232/RS-485 port. The port is located on the bottom back corner of the System Input/Output and Isolation Board (SIO). The SIO board is located on the lower left panel in the flywheel cabinet. Refer to Illustration 2.

  2. Run the UPSView software by double clicking the UPSView icon on your PC desktop.

  3. Click on the "Enter Password" menu option in order to view the "Enter User Name" / "Password" dialog box.

  4. Enter a valid "User Name". Enter a valid "Password". Refer to Illustration 3.

  5. Depress the "<Ctrl><X>" keys in order to bring the system to zero RPM.

  6. The system will prompt you to confirm the option. Depress "<Y>" key.

Note: This procedure is only available once during a 24 hour period.

Note: A minimum of 15 minutes is required to lower the speed of the flywheel to 0 RPM.

Shut Down Procedure for SMS with Bypass Cabinet

  1. Perform a system pre-shutdown. Refer to "System Pre-Shutdown".

  2. Turn the key switch (7) to the BYPASS position. Refer to Illustration 4.

  3. Make sure that the UPS is in bypass mode. To view the mode, press the "Home" soft key (8) that is located on the user interface panel. Observe the status line on the LCD (9). Refer to Illustration 4.


    NOTICE

    If the system does not enter the bypass mode, Do Not Proceed with the procedure. Equipment damage or load interruption may occur. Contact technical support.


    Note: The output of the UPS will be disconnected and/or de-energized by continuing with this procedure.

  4. Close the bypass switch (1) that is located in the bypass cabinet. Refer to Illustration 1.

    Note: Closing the bypass switch will ensure that power to the critical load will not be interrupted.

  5. Open the output switch (2) that is located in the bypass cabinet. Refer to Illustration 1.

  6. Open the input switch (3) that is located in the bypass cabinet. Refer to Illustration 1.

  7. Remove facility power from the Input node of the system. Refer to Illustration 1.

  8. Allow the capacitor banks to purge for approximately 5 minutes.

    Note: When the flywheel is spinning, the following components are energized: the DC bus, the armature leads and the fuses (armature). Accomplish the procedure as quickly as possible. During the procedure, the rotor is spinning on the bottom bearing.

Shut Down Procedure for SMS without Bypass Cabinet

  1. Perform a system pre-shutdown. Refer to "System Pre-Shutdown".

  2. Turn the key switch (7) to the BYPASS position. Refer to Illustration 4.

  3. Make sure that the UPS is in bypass mode. To view the mode, press the "Home" soft key (8) that is located on the user interface panel. Observe the status line on the LCD (9). Refer to Illustration 4.

    Note: The output of the UPS will be disconnected and/or de-energized by continuing with this procedure.

  4. Remove facility power from the Input node of the system. Refer to Illustration 1.

  5. Allow the capacitor banks to purge for approximately 5 minutes.
