Identify which COM PORT that the USB-to-Serial Adapter Is Using
To identify the COM port that the adapter is installed on, perform either Procedure 1 or Procedure 2.
Procedure 1
- Connect the USB-to-Serial device to the USB port on the laptop.
- Click on "Start", "Settings", "Control Panel", and "System".
- In the System Properties window, click on the "Hardware" tab.
- In the Device Manager section, click on the "Device Manager" button.
- In the Device Manager window, click on the "+" next to "Ports (COM and LPT)". There should be an entry for a USB-to-Serial Comm Port followed by the assigned COM port number (COM6 in the example below). Record this COM port, as it will be used in later steps.

Change the Default COM PORT Setting
- Connect the USB-RS232 Adapter to the PL102C Service Cable and start the Caterpillar Service Tool software.
The service tool will attempt to connect automatically to the last used COM port (COM1 by default). If the attempt to connect fails, the startup screen will go away but the software will continue to attempt to connect to the PL102C.
Note: The Service Tool will display the COM port it is using for the connection attempt in the lower portion of the screen ("Connecting to the device...." and "Comm Port 1 is Open" are displayed in Illustration 4). Also note the indicator in the upper right corner of the screen. This indicator can be illuminated either red or green:
Red - No communications have been established with the module.
Green - The Service Tool has established communications with the module.
- Select the COM port as recorded in Step 5 above.
- In order to select a new COM port, you must first abort the connection process. This can be accomplished by clicking on the "Actions" menu bar and clicking on "Disconnect" as shown in Illustration 5.
Note: During the connection process, the "Options" drop-down menu (used to change the COM Port setting) is not available (grayed out).
