Summary

This guideline provides an alternative method that will remove the SystemOne track. This procedure should not be used under normal circumstances. The usage of appropriate tooling is always recommended prior to applying this procedure. If the track links become rusted or corroded, force that is required to remove the track link may be greater than the force provided by the tooling. This guideline is being provided To show the correct way to cut a track link.

NOTICE

A cutting torch is not an acceptable solution for cutting through the track links for removal. The seals within the cartridge pins will begin to fail if the temperature reaches 71° C (160.0° F).

Safety

Illustration 1g02139237

Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs. A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person should also have the necessary training, skills, and tools To perform these functions properly.

This bulletin may contain hazardous steps. Hazardous steps will be identified by warning symbols like the ones.

Warning messages identify a specific, imminent, latent, hazard that has a reasonable probability of resulting in personal injury or death if the warning is ignored.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from not following the proper procedures.

To avoid the possibility of injury or death, follow the established procedure.

------ WARNING! ------

Inspect all threaded components before use. Damaged threads may fail under hydraulic pressure. Broken threads may release flying objects that are propelled with great force. Personal injury or death can occur if struck by flying objects.

------ WARNING! ------

Do not stand near the hydraulic press while the press is in operation. A component that slips or breaks under pressure may fly into the air with great force. Personal injury or death can occur if struck by flying objects.

Canceled Part Numbers and Replaced Part Numbers

This document does not include all canceled part number and replaced part number information. Use NPR on SIS for information about canceled part numbers and replaced part numbers. NPR will provide the current part numbers for replaced parts.

Necessary Tools

Table 2
Required Tools
Qty  Part Number  Description
222-3076  Die Grinder
6V-4087  1/4 inch Mandrel
174-8900  Cutoff Wheel(1)
(1) The cutoff wheel should be no larger than 3 inches in diameter. Use a thin cutoff wheel To prevent heat buildup on the cartridge pin. The thickness of the cutoff wheel should be 0.90 mm (0.035 inch) thick.

Cutting the Track Link

NOTICE

Use this procedure to remove the track links if the SystemOne tooling method will not remove the track links while using the maximum force designed for the tooling.

  1. Due to excessive corrosion, rust, or contamination, the Multi-Pitch Track Press, or the Portable Track Press may not be able to remove the SystemOne track links. If all attempts have been made To use the Multi-Pitch Track Press or the Portable Track Press and the track link cannot be removed, remove all the tooling.

  2. Install the mandrel into the die grinder. Install the cutoff wheel onto the mandrel. Make sure that all the components are tight. The grinder can spin up to 20,000 rpm.

  3. Use the proper protective equipment. Hearing protection, safety glasses, and a full face shield should be worn.

    NOTICE

Verify that any sparks that are created will not allow any combustible material to burn. Use the appropriate protective devices if combustible materials are present. Make sure that a fire extinguisher is readily available if combustible materials are present.

    NOTICE

This procedure does not require the track link to be cut completely through To reduce the force that is required to remove the track link. Take extreme caution while cutting the outside track link. Do not allow the cutoff wheel to contact the SystemOne link box assembly or the cartridge pins. Any contact with the cutoff wheel and the link box assembly or the cartridge pin will create a stress riser. The stress riser may lead to a failure in the future.

  4. Use the die grinder to grind (cut) into the outer track link above the cartridge pin. Grind the outer track link as close as possible to the cartridge pin and the link box assembly. Do not contact the cartridge pin or the link box assembly.

  5. Repeat Step 4 shown in Illustration 5 for the adjoining link box assembly cartridge pin on the same track link. The link should be cut as shown by the arrows in Illustration 6.

  6. Install the Portable Track Press or the Multi-Pitch Track Press. Use the procedure that is specified in Undercarriage Reconditioning Bulletin, REHS2496, "Field Repair of SystemOne Track with the SystemOne Portable Track Press" or Undercarriage Reconditioning Bulletin, SEBF9100, "Field Repair of SystemOne Track with the Multi-Pitch Track Press". Remove the track link.

Note: The guard for the portable track press has been removed for photographic purposes.

  7. Repeat Step 3 through Step 6 To remove the other track link.

  8. Prior to installing the new track links, visually inspect both cartridge pins. Prior to installing the new track links, visually inspect all four of theSystemOnelink box assembly. Replace any components that are damaged.

  9. If the track is worn considerably, trim the new track links To match the existing track links. If trimming is necessary, use a cutting torch or a grinder to remove the material from the rail of the new track link. Trim the new track links before installing onto the SystemOne link box assembly cartridge pins.

Note: Do not use a cutting torch to trim a SystemOne link box assembly section. Purchase a new 70 percent SystemOne link box assembly or machine the new link box assembly section.
