  • The design of certain machines requires the oil seals to not be installed until assembly of the carrier rollers and idlers to the frame. Since the seals are loose the roller or the idler must be shipped without oil.

    1. Add oil to the roller or the idler.

Note: Use 30w diesel engine oil for both the rollers and the idlers.

Note: The rollers and the idlers should be filled to approximately 70% to 80% of capacity. Although it is virtually impossible to know the exact amount of oil for each different carrier roller or idler, an effective amount can be added by making sure that the roller or the idler is not completely filled and that there is approximately 32 ± 6 mm (1.25 ± 0.25 inch) of air space between the oil and bottom of the stopper. An air gap will allow the oil to expand as the roller or the idler heats up keeping the seal from being displaced.

    1. Assemble the seals. One seal half in the seal cavity for the roller or the idler and one seal half in the corresponding seal cavity that is in the frame.

Note: When assembling the oil seals it is important to make sure that all mounting faces are clean and dry and that there is no oil on the rubber rings or on the mating surfaces of the rubber rings. The metal seal faces should be clean and a thin continuous film of oil should be applied to one side of the metal seal faces. The roller or the idler should be assembled as soon as possible after adding the oil to the seal face in order to avoid any contamination from collecting on the seal face.

    1. Mount the roller or the idler in the frame.
