Compression Brake - If Equipped

Usage:

C15 BXS

Jake Brake Compression Brake

Note: There is a fastener group that utilizes hex head bolts for the installation of the compression brake to the cylinder head. If your compression brakes utilize hex head bolts, refer to Specifications, "Compression Brake" for this type of fastener group.

Torque sequence

Note: The installation of the compression brake must be completed prior to adjusting the valve lash, the injector lash, or the compression brake's slave piston lash.

  1. Place the compression brake over the taperlock studs and onto the engine.

  2. Install the hard washers and four bolts (1), (2), (3), and (4) through the engine brake housing group. Finger tighten the four bolts.

  3. Install the hard washer and nut (5). Finger tighten the nut.

Note: Use the torque sequence that is shown in Illustration 2.

  4. Tighten four bolts to 50 ± 7 N·m (37 ± 5 lb ft). Turn the bolts through an additional 90 ± 5 degrees.

  5. Tighten the nut to 50 ± 7 N·m (37 ± 5 lb ft). Turn the nut through an additional 90 ± 5 degrees.

Before the compression brake's slave piston is allowed to contact the bottom of the housing bore, the free running torque of slave piston adjustment screws (1) must not exceed the following value. ... 3 N·m (27 lb in)

(2) Final torque for two full nuts ... 34 ± 5 N·m (25 ± 4 lb ft)

(3) Final torque for three taperlock studs ... 65 ± 10 N·m (48 ± 7 lb ft)

(4) Final torque for the solenoid ... 20 N·m (15 lb ft)

Slave Piston Lash Settings

Note: Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Slave Piston Lash - Adjust" for the complete procedure for adjusting the slave piston lash.

NOTICE

Prior to adjusting the lash setting for the engine compression brake, check the identification plate that is on the compression brake's casting in order to determine the model that is installed on your engine. You must have this model number and the engine's serial number prefix in order to determine the lash setting for your engine.
