Alternator - Remove and Install

Personal injury can result from failure to disconnect the battery. First, disconnect the negative battery cable. Then, disconnect the positive battery cable. A positive power lead can cause sparks if the battery is not disconnected. Sparks can possibly result in battery explosion or fire. |
- Disconnect the batteries.
- Loosen the bolts of the belt tightener and remove the V-belts from the alternator.
- Put an index mark on all of the harness assemblies that are connected to the alternator.

Illustration 1 g01069812 - Remove the nut, the washer, and the harness assembly from terminal (2).
- Disconnect the harness assembly from terminal (3).
- Remove bolt (4) and the harness assembly from alternator (7).
- Remove bolt (1) and bolt (6). Remove the alternator from the alternator mounting bracket.
- If necessary, remove nut (5) and remove the pulley from the alternator.
- If necessary, install the pulley on alternator (7). Install nut (5). Tighten the nut to a torque of
127 ± 10 N·m (94 ± 7 lb ft) . - Position alternator (7) on the alternator mounting bracket. Install bolt (6) and bolt (1).
- Position the harness assembly on the alternator and install bolt (4). Tighten the bolt to a torque of
4.4 ± 1.0 N·m (39 ± 9 lb in) . - Connect the harness assembly to terminal (2) and install the washer and the nut. Tighten the nut to a torque of
18 ± 2 N·m (13 ± 2 lb ft) . - Connect the harness assembly to terminal (3).
- Install the V-belts on the pulley of the alternator and the belt tightener.
- Adjust the belt tightener in order to adjust the tension of the V-belts. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Belt Tension Chart".
- Connect the batteries.
