Alternator - Remove and Install

Removal Procedure

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from failure to disconnect the battery.

First, disconnect the negative battery cable. Then, disconnect the positive battery cable.

A positive power lead can cause sparks if the battery is not disconnected. Sparks can possibly result in battery explosion or fire.


  1. Disconnect the batteries.

  2. Loosen the bolts of the belt tightener and remove the V-belts from the alternator.

  3. Put an index mark on all of the harness assemblies that are connected to the alternator.

  4. Remove the nut, the washer, and the harness assembly from terminal (2).

  5. Disconnect the harness assembly from terminal (3).

  6. Remove bolt (4) and the harness assembly from alternator (7).

  7. Remove bolt (1) and bolt (6). Remove the alternator from the alternator mounting bracket.

  8. If necessary, remove nut (5) and remove the pulley from the alternator.

Installation Procedure

  1. If necessary, install the pulley on alternator (7). Install nut (5). Tighten the nut to a torque of 127 ± 10 N·m (94 ± 7 lb ft).

  2. Position alternator (7) on the alternator mounting bracket. Install bolt (6) and bolt (1).

  3. Position the harness assembly on the alternator and install bolt (4). Tighten the bolt to a torque of 4.4 ± 1.0 N·m (39 ± 9 lb in).

  4. Connect the harness assembly to terminal (2) and install the washer and the nut. Tighten the nut to a torque of 18 ± 2 N·m (13 ± 2 lb ft).

  5. Connect the harness assembly to terminal (3).

  6. Install the V-belts on the pulley of the alternator and the belt tightener.

  7. Adjust the belt tightener in order to adjust the tension of the V-belts. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Belt Tension Chart".

  8. Connect the batteries.
