Operating Hours Discrepancy

Usage:

631E 1AB
System Operation Description:

There are problems that could be reported with the Product Link PL102C system but the problems are not caused by the Product Link PL102C module. The following section describes the problems. This section contains steps that are used to determine the possible cause. The module, the antenna, and cables should be visually inspected for damage. Verify that there are no loose connections.

OPERATING HOURS DISCREPANCY

Description of the Problem:

Discrepancy of the Service Meter Units

The Product Link PL102C system depends on several communication links in order to transfer data from the machine to the office. The following procedures assume that these communication links are operating properly. The proper communication links are listed below:

  • The cellular network is operational in the geographic area of concern. The cellular coverage is confirmed by clicking the "Status" tab on the Caterpillar Service Tool software screen.

  • The worldwide network of Caterpillar's computers is passing messages to the Equipment Manager (EM) software.

  • EM is configured properly and the software is functioning.

The Product Link PL102C module should not be replaced without verifying that the issues listed above have been investigated. Contact the Service System Support Center for aid in resolving these issues.

Note: The Service Meter Units that are reported by the Product LinkPL102C module should approximately match the machine operating hours.

Test Step 1. ACCESS THE PRODUCT LINK THROUGH CATERPILLAR SERVICE TOOL.

  1. Connect Caterpillar Service Tool to the machine.

  1. Verify that the Product LinkPL102C module is available.

Expected Result:

The Product Link PL102C module is available.

Results:

  • OK - The Product LinkPL102C module is available. Proceed to Test Step 2.

  • NOT OK - The Product Link PL102C module does not connect.

Repair: Verify that the wiring for the Product Link PL102C module has been installed correctly. Refer to Special Instuction, REHS2143, "Confirm Wiring Harness Connections". Step 4 of the procedure in the "Confirm Wiring Harness Connections" section, checks the wiring with a multimeter. If the ECM (Product Link) is not available, refer to System Operation Troubleshooting Testing and Adjusting, RENR8115, "Electronic Service Tool Does Not Communicate with ECM".

    Stop.

Test Step 2. VERIFY THAT THE PRODUCT LINK IS CONFIGURED PROPERLY.

  1. Go to the "Configuration" tab in Caterpillar Service Tool.

  1. Verify that the hours in the "Total Operating Hours" field match the machine's service meter units.

Expected Result:

The hours are within 1%.

Results:

  • OK - The hours are within 1%. The Product Link is operating correctly. Stop.

  • NOT OK - The hours are not within 1%. Proceed to Test Step 3.

Test Step 3. VERIFY THAT THE PRODUCT LINK MODULE MONITORS THE "ENGINE RUNNING INPUT" PROPERLY.

  1. Go to the "Status" tab in Caterpillar Service Tool.

  1. Verify that the "Engine Running Input" displays "Engine off".

  1. Start the engine.

  1. Verify that the "Engine Running Input" changes to "Engine On" within 20 to 30 seconds.

  1. Verify that the "Key Switch Status" is "On".

Expected Result:

The data in the "Engine Running Input" field of the "Status" tab in Caterpillar Service Tool changes from "Engine Off" to "Engine On" when the machine is started. The "Key Switch Status" should be "On".

Results:

  • OK - The fields in Caterpillar Service Tool are correct. The Product Link PL102C module is correctly reading the machine run status. This allows the Product Link PL102C to monitor the machine operating hours correctly.

Repair: Check the connections using the procedure near the end of the installation instructions of the Special Instruction, REHS2143, "Confirm Wiring Harness Connections " in order to insure that there are not intermittent connections. Monitor the Product LinkPL102C module for intermittent connections.

    Stop.

  • NOT OK - The status did not change from "Engine Off" to "Engine On" in the "Engine Running Input" field of the "Status" tab of Caterpillar Service Tool.

Repair: Verify that the alternator R-Terminal wire 403 -GN and wire 308 -YL key switch wiring are correctly installed. Verify that the R-terminal and key switch wiring have no damage to the insulation or wires. If the problem is not corrected, replace the Product Link PL102C module.

    Stop.
