Capacitor Housing

(1) Housing

(2) Terminal

  • Remove the capacitor from the alternator.

    1. Touch terminal (2) to housing (1) in order to discharge the capacitor.

Note: Discharge the capacitor after each measurement.

    1. Connect the negative multimeter lead to the capacitor housing (1) and the positive multimeter lead to the ring terminal (2) .

    1. Measure the resistance and record the results.

    1. Repeat Step 2.

    1. Reverse the leads and measure again.

Expected Result: The resistance is low for a short period of time. Then the resistance gradually increases to greater than 100000 ohms.

      Results:

OK - The resistance gradually increases to greater than 100000 ohms. The capacitor is normal.

NOT OK - The resistance is infinite or the resistance does not gradually increase to greater than 100000 ohms. Replace the capacitor.
