Usage:

785C 1HW
Caterpillar Products: 3500 Family Pumpers 3500 and 3500B Family Generator Sets and Power Modules with Standard Displacement 3500B Machine Engines with Standard Displacement
Engine:Commercial 3500 and 3500B Engines with Standard Displacement

Introduction

Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you read this information and you understand this information.

A new piston has been introduced for 3500 Engines. The pistons require a new piston cooling jet and a new retainer for the piston cooling jet.

Install the Correct Piston Cooling Jet and the Correct Retainer

(2) 193-3282 Retainer As

NOTICE

Failure to install the correct piston cooling jet and retainer will result in inadequate lubrication. This will cause piston seizure and catastrophic engine damage. Install the correct piston cooling jet and the correct retainer.

When you install the 233-2430 Piston or the 233-2431 Piston , also install the 204-5447 Piston Cooling Jet As and the 193-3282 Retainer As (Piston Cooling Jet). Installation of the correct piston cooling jet and retainer will ensure that the piston has adequate cooling and lubrication.

The 233-2430 Piston is part of the 10R-1816 Cylinder Pack Gp .

The 233-2431 Piston is part of the 10R-1817 Cylinder Pack Gp .

The 10R-1816 Cylinder Pack Gp and the 10R-1817 Cylinder Pack Gp are ordered as a group. However, the packs will require the 204-5447 Piston Cooling Jet As and the 193-3282 Retainer As (Piston Cooling Jet). If you install the 10R-1816 Cylinder Pack Gp or the 10R-1817 Cylinder Pack Gp make sure that you are using the 204-5447 Piston Cooling Jet As and the 193-3282 Retainer As .

Correct Orientation of the Piston Pin Retainer

(3) 214-6073 Retainer

(4) 253-1238 Pin Retainer

When a piston and rod is assembled, the 214-6073 Retainer must be oriented correctly.

Note: Remanufactured cylinder packs do not need to be inspected.

The 214-6073 Retainer should be marked with the word OUT on one of the tabs. Discard the retainer if the retainer is not marked with the word OUT on one of the tabs. Obtain a new 253-1238 Pin Retainer .

If the 214-6073 Retainer is marked with the word OUT, ensure that the retainer is installed with OUT facing away from the piston pin. Ensure that the piston pin rotates freely after installation of the retainer. If the piston pin does not rotate freely, and the 214-6073 Retainer is correctly installed, discard the retainer. Obtain a new 253-1238 Pin Retainer .

The 253-1238 Pin Retainer is not marked. Either side of the 253-1238 Pin Retainer can be facing the piston pin. When you install either the 214-6073 Retainer or the 253-1238 Pin Retainer , orient the retainer's opening toward the top of the piston. Refer to Illustration 2.

Note: After the assembly of the piston and rod, check the rotation of the piston pin. If the piston pin retainer is not installed correctly, the piston pin may not rotate smoothly. Failure to check the rotation could allow a seizure of the pin joint.

Some of the parts have been cancelled and replaced. The information in this Special Instruction still applies to the former parts.

  • The 233-2430 Piston has been cancelled and replaced by the 282-0644 Piston .

  • The 233-2431 Piston has been cancelled and replaced by the 278-0247 Piston .

  • The 10R-1816 Cylinder Pack Gp has been cancelled and replaced by the 10R-4378 Piston and Rod Gp .

  • The 10R-1817 Cylinder Pack Gp has been cancelled and replaced by the 10R-4343 Piston and Rod Gp .

  • The 197-0560 Piston Pin has been cancelled and replaced by the 263-8955 Piston Pin .
