The varistor is a protective device that absorbs electrical energy from load-induced transients and surges. The varistor will dissipate the surge away from the critical generator components. During load-induced transients and surges, electrical energy can be reflected back to the rotating field and exciter circuit via the stator and rotor windings. Without a method of absorbing and dissipating the energy away from the exciter circuit, damage could occur to the generator's stator and rotor due to repeated transients and surges.

The potential for damage to the varistor exists under the following conditions:

  • Paralleling a generator set to another generator set

  • Paralleling a generator set to the local utility

  • A combination of paralleling a generator set to another generator set and to the local utility

A varistor's life can be significantly shortened when incorrect paralleling procedures are employed. If a dealer/customer experiences a varistor failure, the paralleling procedures that are being used should be examined in detail. When varistors are damaged, other critical generator components (diodes and regulators) will be prone to damage. Proper application and proper operation must be employed in order to minimize repair costs and package down time.
