If the temperature of 2W-8147 Gear is raised too much, the gear will become annealed. The current Disassembly and Assembly modules instruct the temperature of the gear to be raised to 316 °C (600 °F). The new maximum temperature for the installation of the gear is 205 °C (400 °F).

NOTICE

Do not use a torch to heat the gear. A torch can unevenly heat the gear causing warpage. The hardness of the gear may also be changed with the use of a torch.

If you plan on reusing the gear, do not raise the temperature higher than 205 °C (400 °F) during removal. Use the following procedure when you install the 2W-8147 Gear :

  1. Preheat the oven to a maximum temperature of 205 °C (400 °F).

  1. Heat the gear in the oven for a maximum of 1 hour.

  1. Install the gear on the crankshaft with the keyway in alignment with the dowel. The timing mark "V" should face away from the crankshaft.

    NOTICE

The gear can be heated two times. Engine damage can occur if the gear is heated more than two times.

  1. If the gear does not fit and the gear was not heated during removal of the gear, then repeat Step 1 through Step 3. Do not heat the gear more than two times during the life of the gear.
