- Caterpillar Products: Machine Engines
- All 3500 Series
Description of Change: An new alternator belt is being introduced for use in all 3500 Machine Engines. The new alternator belt is constructed of a material that has a proven resistance to fatigue. The new alternator belt also has a higher temperature rating.
Adaptable To: The 141-7116 Belt is a direct replacement for the 7E-4841 Serpentine Belt, which is being discontinued in August 2003. The 141-7116 Belt is currently used on 992G Wheel Loaders. In August 2003, the new alternator belt will be used on all of the above products. The new alternator belt has the same dimensions as the previous alternator belt.
Belt Tension is Critical to the Service Life of Alternator Belts
To obtain the maximum service life of the alternator belt and of the pulleys, the correct belt tension is critical. If the tension is inadequate, the belt may roll on the pulley or the belt may slip. The slipping will reduce the service life of the belt. If the tension is excessive, the extra tension on the belt and on the pulleys will reduce the service life of the parts.
Tension for the 141-7116 Belt
- Tension for a new belt ... 800 N (180 lb)
- Tension for a used belt ... 489 N (110 lb)
When you install a new belt, adjust the belt to the correct tension. Then, operate the engine for a minimum of 30 minutes at the full load rpm (rated speed) that is stamped on the engine information plate.
A belt is considered to be used after at least 30 minutes of use at the rated speed. After a minimum of 30 minutes of operation at the rated speed, stop the engine and adjust the tension to the specification for a used belt.
The new 240-8220 Belt Tension Gauge Gp is recommended for tensioning of the belt.
A New Belt Tension Gauge is Available
The new 240-8220 Belt Tension Gauge Gp is now available. The gauge is for use with belts that have eight ribs. The gauge will work with belts that have a top width in the range of 9.65 to 31.75 mm (0.380 to 1.250 inch). The gauge has a working range of 445 to 890 N (100 to 200 lb).
