Studies have shown that all housings will crack in the area of the divider wall. These cracks relieve stress in the housing. Testing has determined that the cracks will stop growing when the cracks reach a maximum length. Testing has also shown that housings that have cracks in the divider wall have lower stress levels than housings with no cracks. There is no difference in performance between housings with cracks and housings without cracks. Therefore, you will see remanufactured turbochargers with cracks in the divider wall of the turbine housing. The cracks are normal (1) and the cracks will not reduce durability.

The following issues will cause a turbocharger housing to not be reused:

    • excessive amount of cracks (2)

    • cracks in the mounting foot (3)

    • cracks that have propagated through the housing

Note: The policy for the turbine housing should not be confused with the criteria for acceptance of turbochargers from Caterpillar Remanufactured Products Group. For information on the criteria of acceptance of cores, refer to the Core Acceptance Criteria that is listed above.
