Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.

  1. Apply a thin coat of Tooling (D) to the outside diameter of lip seal (1). Use Tooling (A) in order to install lip seal (1) in body (2). Install lip seal (1) even with the bottom of the bearing bore with the lip of the seal toward the bearings. Apply a small layer of engine oil on the lip of the seal.

  2. Place slinger (3) in position above lip seal (1).

    Note: Only use clean water as a lubricant for assembly. Do not damage the silicone carbide ring or the silicone carbide seal assembly. Do not place your hands on the wear surfaces of the silicone carbide ring or the silicone carbide seal assembly.

  3. Place carbide ring (4) in position in the rubber seal. Install the silicone carbide ring with the smoothest face of the ring toward the silicone carbide ring. Use a clean cover for protection while you install the silicone carbide ring. Install the silicone carbide ring evenly with hand pressure.

  4. Use Tooling (B) in order to install snap ring (5) on shaft (6).

  5. Raise bearings (7) and (9) to a maximum temperature of 135 °C (275 °F).

  6. Install bearing (9) on shaft (6) against snap ring (5).

  7. Install spacer (8) and bearing (7). Ensure that bearing (7) is in full contact with the spacer.

    Note: Ensure that slinger (3) is in the correct position on shaft (6) when you install shaft (6) in body (2).

    Note: Apply a piece of tape to both ends of the shaft in order to protect the seals from damage during the assembly procedure.

  8. Install shaft (6) and the bearings in body (2) through slinger (3).

  9. Use Tooling (C) in order to install snap ring (10) that holds the shaft assembly in place.

  10. Install key (12) in the shaft.

  11. Place spacer (11) in position over shaft (6).

  12. Install gear (13), the washer, and the locknut. Tighten the locknut to a torque of 60 ± 7 N·m (45 ± 5 lb ft).

    Note: Only use clean water as a lubricant for assembly. Do not damage the carbon ring or the ceramic ring. Do not place your hands on the wear surface of the carbon ring or the ceramic ring.

  13. Install silicone carbide seal assembly (15) over shaft (6). Push silicone carbide seal assembly (15) on the shaft until the seal faces make light contact.

  14. Install spring retainer (17) on silicone carbide seal assembly (15).

  15. Place spring (16) in position on silicone carbide seal assembly (15).

  16. Place the original thickness of shims (14) on spring retainer (17).

  17. Firmly install impeller (18) on shaft (6).

    Note: Ensure that spring retainer (17) and the shims stay in position on shaft (6).

  18. Install the locknut for the impeller. Tighten the locknut to a torque of 30 ± 3 N·m (22 ± 2 lb ft).

    Note: The locknut has left hand thread.

  19. Check Clearance (X) between body (2) and impeller (18). The clearance must be 0.254 ± 0.127 mm (0.0100 ± 0.0050 inch). Add or remove shims (14) behind impeller (18), if necessary.

  20. Place gaskets (20) in position on the body. Align the identification marks. Install housing (19).

  21. Measure Clearance (Y) between impeller (18) and the inside of housing (19). The clearance between the impeller and the housing must be 0.572 ± 0.191 mm (0.0225 ± 0.0075 inch). If necessary, add or remove gaskets (20) between the body and the housing.

  22. Apply Tooling (D) to the threads of the pipe nipples on elbow (21). Install elbow (21) in housing (19).

End By:

  1. Install the auxiliary water pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Auxiliary Water Pump - Install" for the engine that is being serviced.
