Caterpillar has reviewed the replacement criteria in the Special Instruction, REHS0489-01, "Replacement Criteria for Camshafts in 3406E, C-15, and C-16 Truck Engines" for determining when the engine camshaft needs to be replaced. This current instruction was specifically written in order to address metallurgical concerns with early (S/N: 5EK1-55087) engines. These problems are described in Service Letter PS5444. The Special Instruction, REHS0489-01 provides a flow chart and illustrations in order to determine if replacement of the camshaft is needed. Caterpillar is issuing new replacement criteria, flow charts, and illustrations for replacing camshafts in engines that are built after (S/N: 5EK55087).
The Special Instruction, REHS0489-01 is being purged and replaced. This information will now be included in the new Special Instruction, REHS1572-00. This instruction also includes new replacement criteria for the above listed engines. Some pitting and scratches on the camshaft lobes are now allowed in the new replacement criteria. Please see the new Special Instruction, REHS1572-00 for the flow chart and photos of the new criteria.
