Required Tools
Tool  Part Number  Part Name  Qty
A  150-3992  Timing Pin (Fuel Injection Pump)
B  157-3719  Ratchet Wrench

  1. Ensure that the No. 1 cylinder is at the top center compression stroke. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel Injection Timing - Check".

  2. Insert Tooling (A) through the slot in the hub and into the timing hole of the fuel injection pump. If the Tooling (A) can be fully inserted, the fuel injection timing is correct. There should be no resistance when Tooling (A) is inserted.

Note: Do not remove hub nut (1) from the shaft of the fuel injection pump. The hub of the fuel injection pump is installed in the correct position from the factory in order to ensure proper timing. If hub nut (1) is removed and the hub is removed, the hub will need to be accurately installed on the shaft of the fuel injection pump by the use of special equipment. Refer to your Caterpillar Dealer for more information.

  3. Install O-ring seal (11) on the hub of the fuel injection pump.

  4. Position Tooling (A) through the slot in fuel injection pump gear (2). Install the fuel injection pump gear on the hub of the fuel injection pump.

Note: Do Not rotate the crankshaft.

  5. Install nuts (7). Tighten the nuts to a torque of 22 N·m (16 lb ft).

  6. Install the bolt and nut (10). Tighten the nut to a torque of 22 N·m (16 lb ft).

  7. Position the harness assembly on the fuel injection pump. Push locking mechanism (5) in order to connect harness assembly (6).

  8. Connect tube assemblies (4) to the fuel injection pump. Tighten the compression nuts to a torque of 9 N·m (80 lb in).

Note: Do Not rotate the crankshaft.

  9. Install bolts (3) and washers. Do Not tighten the bolts at this time.

  10. Rotate the fuel injection pump gear counterclockwise in order to remove the backlash between the idler gear and the fuel injection pump gear. Do Not rotate the crankshaft or the hub of the fuel injection pump. Tighten bolts (3) to a torque of 28 N·m (21 lb ft).

  11. Remove the Tooling (A) from the fuel injection pump.

  12. Loosen bolt (8) in order to install spacer (9). Tighten bolt (8).

Note: Spacer (9) must be installed on the fuel injection pump in order to release the shaft of the fuel injection pump. Some pumps may have a plug and seal instead of a bolt (8) and (9) spacer.

End By:

  1. Install the fuel injection lines. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fuel Injection Lines - Remove and Install".

  2. Install the water pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Water Pump - Remove".
